Sony Vegas playback with mixer is distorted

Running sony vegas 10 and a phonic 12 firewire mixer board. Recording, monitoring all great with headphones plugged into the board.
When I play back recorded audio from the timeline while listening with the headphones plugged into the board - it is really hot...distorted..

only connection to the comp is the firewire, and i have sony vegas set to asio. this knocks out all other sound from the computer so
no speaker sound at all

i have played with buttons to no avail. I can turn off the board and switch vegas back to microsoft from asio and the audio is perfect..u can then hear it on the speakers....but kind of a pain if you just want to listen to 5 seconds of audio while recording a bunch.

not sure if this is supposed to work like this or i have a defective board or am missing some setting..

any insight greatly appreciated
Randall

Sounds like the output level of Vegas's mixing panel is set too high. As a first step, load a -20dBFS sine wave test tone file into a new project, play it back, and adjust the software master faders so Vegas's meter reads -20. Is there a control panel with level adjustments that's part of the driver? Check that the submix level for the control room output isn't set too high.

This would probably get better answers on a VEGAS board on maybe there is a VEGAS section on DVX?

VEGAS is not used much by audio folks so most of us are not going to be much help.

Going by my troubleshooting background I would look at the ASIO path. Did the mixer come with ASIO drivers? Did you install them? Are they made for your version of Windows (if not get some that are designed for it)? Is there an ASIO setup for the device and is it set correctly?

Basically if one way works and another doesn't the problem is usually with the way that doesn't.

I haven't been on Windows since 98 but drivers were 90% of the issues then.

Hey thanks for the replies...ASIO installed. Totally weird thing - fired it up today and it worked ! First time ever and I have been dealing with this off and on for abot 1 year. Played back from the timeline and it was clean and sounded great. Then after a few minutes, all the tracks were distorted. I'm thinking I can try the cable, or the problem lies in the the phonic mixer..Level changes in vegas or on the mixer do nothing to cure the issues...maybe its time for mackie...doubt it is windows in this case....thanks

Randall, is this your board?
The reason I ask is because of what is said in the description.
Pre/Post switches on each input channel allow users to adjust the outgoing FireWire signal between a pre-EQ, pre-fader, pre-low cut, to a "post" signal.I'm thinking that could be your problem.
You should check your firwire cable at the same time as they can and do go bad without any warning :(

Hey Mike
I have the first version - mk1 - checking out your link [thanks] there are a few cosmetic differences ...but there are no pre post switches on mine...other than that, essentially it appears the same button wise....i already did try a second firewire cable.....pain in the .....it might be heat related, the board does work okay for a bit when starting up - although I haven't totally confirmed this thanks a lot Mike
