Sony Vegas 10 Questions/Comments

I have decided to edit a larger documentary in Sony Vegas Pro 10. I have grown very accustom to the Vegas Pro work flow (which I find to be most intuitive of all the NLEs). Some Questions....

1) I have always had issues with media management in Vegas Pro and kept it for only shorter less intensive projects. I will be having to sync audio for a lot of my clips and unlike Avid and FCP there is no way to have the clean (seperate) audio synced to the video outside of the timeline (NO ORGANIZATION OF NEWLY SYNCED CLIPS OUTSIDE OF TIMELINE). Please correct me if I am wrong about this, if not, does any one have any Vegas Pro 10 workflow suggestions?

2) Vegas Pro 10 seems to handle my footage incredibly well, better than 8 or 9. I have worked with Premiere CS5 also and I would say it rivals if not beats it out in regards to handling HD footage in timeline.

I m doing the exact same thing you are. Big doc with 5 different cameras and frame rates. Gh1 is the majority but have a few others. Using neoscene to deinterlace. Pro 10 is working great. I am using pluraleyes beta for pro 10 to do audio sync. What I do is create temp timelines. Stick the days shots and audio in there, then synch up. Save taht file. Then when ready to edit go back to that temp timeline and cut and paste to my project timeline. It would be great to have a conversation with you as you get into it. Maybe we can help each other out.

You're right, you can't simply replace audio and create a sub-clip *with* alternate audio.

3 workarounds :

First, identify all the cuts by regions and save it as a kinf of "bin project"

1. batch render to mxf (or other) once everything resynched in the timeline of the "bin project"
2. use a project as a "bin project" with region names for your pseudo subclips (copy paste regions events from one instance to the other (you will lost track fx).
3. use this "bin project" as a nested project. Open it in the trimmer when working in your "master" project (you will see all the regions from "bin" project.

HOpe this help...

If this is your first time doing a large project in Vegas like this, I would STRONGLY suggest transcoding your footage into a better format. Like Cineform, or the Matrox VfW codec. It will make the experience a LOT more pleasant down the road. And yes, for Media Management, you are on your own.

This is the first time for me doing a project larger than a short film or news piece in Vegas.

I have cineform neoscene and have used it in the past when working in Final Cut and Premiere. I love the codec (chroma interpolation) but Vegas for some reason has little difficulty handling the codec. I don't see much of a reason to transcode right now (I could be wrong in the future). Why would you suggest Perone???
