Sony URX/UTX sound like a frying egg.

WOW I just got a used set of sony URX-P1 and UTX-B1 and it sounds awful. I am new to the world of wireless but my main issue is the noise that I get every time someone starts to talk, its sounds like a horrible sample rate on a dodgy compresor. They do have a headphone output that barley drives my 7506's.... I have to use them for a project that I have coming up and will post some examples, but after this project its time to upgrade. I am using them with some B6's and it fells like its not able to drive them to there full potential we will see.

Without some samples and a lot more details about the various ways you tested it to identify the problem, we can only offer our sympathy. You said you bought it used. Was it claimed that it was in working condition? It could simply be broken or damaged.

I've got those units, how are your B6s wired? They need to conform to Sonys custom lav cable wiring for that rig.

If you're not sure take your B6s, see a suitable shop and compare any Sony ECM44-77BMP lavs before you do anything else.

You can get your B6s output cable rewired .. btw the Sony lav supplied with that rig is rubbish.

Cheers.

Raster,
If you have helpful wiring info, might as well post it as opposed to sending someone on a search for it, right? ;)
But yes...as an owner of multiple UWP systems, it seems B6s can be ordered from factory as Sony compatible. I don't know the details.

Countryman has an awesome page on this over here. Here is the diagram that I used, I think its going to be deferent depending on the impedance of each mic, looks like sony wants a 10k load, I tried a 2k for fun, more bright but less natural.

We commonly use Zener diodes as noise generators. I am amazed that it even works as well as it does. You might need to try various Zeners to find a quieter one. The Countryman page doesn't specifically mention URX or UTX. How did you determine you are using the correct parameters?

I think my wireless system falls in the uwp series, my system has the same naming convention. Interesting note about the zener diode as I think they use them on other systems as well. I think it might be a circuit protection thing....
