SONY Spins Off Image Sensor Business

Hmm. Last February Sony said it was spinning off its audio and video divisions this month but keeping its image sensor business. (We even talked about it in a thread.) Change of plans?

Upping the combined stock value and letting the lesser branches fend for themselves.

As noted in the article, Sony makes a giant percentage of the various camera sensors (for its own models, obviously, also for Olympics and many Panasonic and Nikon units). I don't think this will avail their latest tech to the off-the-shelf purchases though until a certain time - 12-18 months - elapses. Or, alternatively, they will sell the latest tech in exchange for other corporate non-compete agreements.

Sony's semiconductor business is highly profitable, mostly because its sensors are widely used in smartphones (especially Apple models), DSLRs from manufacturers like Nikon, and Sony's own popular cameras. The move means that Sony's core businesses are now mobile, gaming, imaging (cameras), movies, music and financial services. Those businesses -- especially mobile -- will now have to stand on their own without sensors to prop them up.
