Hi,

For using with the canon 5d mark ii,

i wanted to use rode videomic pro at first.

Instead, i thought of using a sony shotgun ECM-XM1

I would have to use a xlr to 3.5mm adapter :

The thing is i don't have +20dB gain on the sony shotgun ECM-XM1
(i write this post because on the sony hxr-nx30 with the XLR pad, the shotgun sounds very good, so i was interested to use it on my dslr.

What do you think ? any thoughts?

Thanks in advance,

I think you need to think this through carefully.

The ECM-XM1 requires phantom power. How do you expect to provide that from the 5DmkII? And with that adapter cable? The cable you linked, by the way, has the wrong XLR connector. You would need a female connector, as opposed to male; not that it matters because this isn't a viable solution.

Also, are you simply looking for an on-camera mic? As you should well know, on-camera is a terrible place for a mic for most applications, other than b-roll (and even then it's not ideal). That, plus less-than-stellar audio recording quality in-camera on a DSLR, makes it pretty simple. Put the easiest solution on your camera as a safeguard, in this case the VideoMic Pro, and rely on dual-system sound for the important stuff.

yes i rely on videomic pro for safeguard.
For important stuff, i might use juicedlink, or even better as you said, tascam 60D. The only thing with 60D is that its big if i want to use it without tripod (with the juicedlink i can record audio in an expo while walking more easily, with a cardioid condensor mic to give to somebody or putting a lavalier on me plugged into the juicedlink). I don't see myself walk around with the big tascam 60d on the bottom of the camera.

Thanks Alex for your comments its always very much appreciated.

I agree with this for anything that doesn't have good audio inputs, preamps & a headphone jack. But get a camera with those things & dual system audio is overkill for a lot of video work & just adding to your workflow.

I don't trust audio that I can't listen to when I record, so for a 5D ii I would always be recording into something else & monitoring that feed. But if I had a 5D iii with a Juicedlink that was giving good low noise preamps, I'd be fine with just monitoring the audio the 5D iii is recording.

I agree, a Tascam 60D isn't well designed for handheld. Though I think it works for a shoulder mount rig. The 70D is better for under the camera, but some of the Juiced Link adapters are very tiny & light weight, so I think they wouldn't be too bad on top or under a DSLR for handheld shooting.

Big thing is what works for you. (Also make sure that any XLR audio device you get has P48.)
