Sony SELP18200 w/Zoom Rocker Tested

the LANC focus control works with my metabones adapter on a Canon EOS lens.

This is also great news. I have my Metabones Speed Booster on order....going on 4 weeks.

Do you have the speedbooster or the Smart Adapter?

ALSO

Did you test the Zoom on the SELP lens?

I have both, but, tested the remote focus on only the speedbooster. Yes, the focus and the variable pot contolled zoom both work on the SELP. You can't make it zoom faster, but, you can slow it to a dead crawl.

I have a very old

Just got word today that my speed booster is on the way. That is great news that the LANC can control the focus of a Canon lens through the Speed booster. Ill post back when I have a chance to report back if my LANC will operate the same as yours...although I can't see why it wouldn't.

Just to clarify what you wrote, are you saying you can't vary the the SELP zoom speed with your LANC at all?

He said "the variable pot contolled zoom both work on the SEL..." I think he' saying it works and you can make it go slower but not faster. Hope I'm not putting words in his mouth. If I can avoid using the Sony handle I will be very happy.

Well if there is a slower than the there has to be a faster...lol

I guess I am trying to clarify...slower than what? Faster than what?

Cuervo maybe you can clarify, sorry if I am missing something basic. It's one of a couple scenarios;

Cranking the zoom lever will make the zoom go faster than just gently pressing the zoom lever - in other words the FS700 supports fully variable zoom speeds on the flywith the SELP through the LANC.

OR

Once you set the speed, the zoom will only zoom in and out at that one speed...in other words its not fully variable on the fly.

The Varizzoom controller has a fully adjustable potentiometer on it that allows you to set the zoom speed. The fastest limitation, of course, is the maximum speed of the Sony servo/stepper motor. There's really no way to get that stepper motor to zoom faster than at the maximum design speed, defined by the "high" selection on the on-lens zoom switch. The slowest zoom speed is adjustable, on the fly, by turning this knob down. That is NOT to say that the zoom speed is a function of how far you depress the zoom rocker. That appears to be a binary on-off rocker swith.

Im not sure if the rocker is completely binary. It took a few goes as it does not have a nice resistance, but i'd swear on the fast setting I'd depress 3/4 and then full, and get a change in speed. A seperate controller with a better rocker might be able to make a good difference here to smoothness of ramping.

You can make it binary if you want though in the zoom menu by changing it from variable to fixed and set speed. And, no, cannot set speed over 32. I wonder if that zoom menu existed before? Can someone who has not firmwared their fs700 confirm if it has a zoom menu. (camera Set, inbetween AE Shift and Steadyshot).
I am guessing not.

The FS700 rocker is variable speed if set as such in the menu. The control mapping could use some work though. Currently is way too sensitive- goes full speed too soon. For fixed speed zooms, the control on the lens works nicely.

how good is auto focus? i wonder if some one could post a clip with auto focus test .... would be great to see

regards

Depends on what you want to use it for, but it will be usable for many situations. It basically keeps whatever is in the center of the frame in focus. Its reasonably fast but not super fast. The Alpha lenses apparently have better focusing. There is a Vimeo video somewhere showing off the focusing abilities of an Alpha lens on an FS700

hm strange. hard to believe that alfa lens over adopter gives better focusing then its own lens

alpha lenses with the LA-EA2 adapter i assume? that's phase detection focus, like dslr, so not surprisingly faster than contrast detection.

How is the manual focus on this SELP18200? I remember renting the kit lens when I first got the FS700 and I hated the manual focus. I don't know what it's called but internally the lens does something to supposedly help you focus but in practice makes it harder to gauge how far you have to turn the focus ring to get you to where you want because it seems different every time.
