Sony SCL-Z18X140 lens

I just was contacted by my Sony rep that the new Zoom 18-252 is now available and until the end of the year there is a $1200 rebate, but still a very expensive lens, and at the most zoomed end it is only f/6 (3.8 wide). I know it depends on your needs, but this lens does have image stabilization, does use the rocker switch, and covers a lot of ground. Does anyone see this being a valuable piece of glass to own?

Hmm...I'm still thinking I'd rather put that money towards a HPX3100 (or used 2700/3000) to go with my HD 2/3" glass. Even if the new lens allows you an ENG-style configuration, the F3 is less than ideal for this type of work. It could be useful if you went away on location and had to do some run-and-go components of a doco or TVC. But generally I think the F3 goes best with primes and fast manual short zooms.

I am in the same camp. If I am spending that kinda coin on a lens, I'll just get an Optimo!
(well trying to find one now actually!) Anyone have a 30-80 for sale?

The sony zoom is so sloooow that its going to make the DOF bigger no matter what. You're not going to do hand held with over about 35mm.

Really, if I was going to do ENG stuff and wanted the deeper DOF I would have kept my EX1, which I just sold.

I know 'No Reservations' is shot on an F3 with a Panavised 17-35mm. You can do hand held with a lens like that, or the Nikon version. (I've often wondered if Panavision used the Nikon glass because its the same specs, just rehoused like Dulcos does it.)

It's expensive but still a lot less than what I paid for the Fujinon lens on my XDCAM HD. But for now I'll stick to my primes, Nikon and Tokina zooms and rent the new Sony zoom if I have a need.

cheers
Morton

Same here, no interest. Don't want to have to re-light when I zoom in... 3D stuff.. I could see a reason to buy, having so much electronic control.
