Sony RX100 IV - 4K

Crap, no headphone and mic ports on the RX100 IV. Also, only 5 minute 4K clips? Awesome looking camera, but those things killed it for me. Was hoping for an all in one pocket sized solution that I could fit in my laptop bag.

I haven't done the research yet, but what are some of the main differences between the RX10 II and the RX100 IV?

Shut up and take my money.

Sony is on an ABSOLUTE TEAR. WOWSER. This will be my new pocket camera. I understand it isn't for everyone...but dang...it's a PERFECT fit for me.

Cheers Peeps! :)

AGREED!

The TRUE POCKET SIZE is why I bought my RX100II. No...OF COURSE it doesn't compete with the image quality or functions of bigger cameras.

But the RX100s really actually do fit comfortably in one's pocket - and that makes a HUGE difference when it comes to actually getting shots vs. wishing you could have got a shot.

4K only for 5-minutes at a clip. Well, there are still PLENTY of shooting scenarios that don't use takes longer than 5-minutes. To call that limit a deal-breaker just means you're really in the market for a different style of camera at this point.

Yes: the size. With 4K, xavc-s, slog2 and image stabilization, I don't really know what complaints anyone could have for such a small camera. Well, that I don't have $1K lying around for this right now, but that's a completely different problem...

I finally got to watch this. At 1080p, which is what my monitor supports. What worries me the most: the detailed background pulsating because of lack of bandwidth on a long-GoP codec. I hope it's a youtube thing, because really, I can't imagine them uploading something with the grass thing at 0:20 being that bad.

If I shoot 20 minutes of 4K footage, will this camera break it up into 5 minute clips, or does it just stop recording after 5 minutes of filming?
Do you think the 1080 footage is usable for interviews and documentary work? Anyone with the RX100 III can answer this. I use a Canon G30 and HMC150, and really would love to use this as a B camera or when I am places that I don't have my dedicated video cameras. I would use this mostly for video, and would use my external mic as the audio feed.
To me, I saw footage from the RX100 III and it looks like it is right up there with the Canon Vixia cameras, or G30. What do you think?
I like the footage from the LX100, but the retractable screen and size of this camera, plus low light, is just exciting to think I can take it everywhere and also not be noticed.

Anyone with experience with taking photos indoors where normal camera need a flash. Does the RX100 III need to use the flash with its lens in those conditions?

Pretty sure I will get this.

what SD card is recommended for this camera. I assume a SDXC and 64GB. would you go with lexar, sandisk, pny, or transend?
I mostly use Sandisk, but have used transend too. never had an an issue with these.
But with this small camera, I don't want any chance for over heating if I use the 4K video recording or any dato transfer issue.
thanks

This piece has some very interesting info about the sensors in the RX100 IV, RX10 II, and a7R II. The part that impressed me the most (and the reason I'm posting it on this thread, not the a7R II thread): this 1" sensor has 12 ADCs per column (87552 ADCs in total). That's insane. The usual thing is one, some sensors have two. The readout time in this sensor must be really fast: it's basically global shutter "by force" instead of "by design".

Let's see what the a7000 brings to the table (if/when it arrives), but I see myself buying an RX100 IV for slowmo, for the N4000, and for all those moments where you'll only have a good camera around if it fits in your pocket.

I really like the RX100 IV, for the fact that you can put it in your pocket and all the features they somehow packed in there. Let's face it, we love to take video, and there are situations when we don't have our big cameras with us and we wished we could take better video then our cell phones.
My question between the RX100 IV and the RX10 II, is do they shoot the same video quality at 24-70mm. It seems people are using the RXII for pro work, and I would like to use the RX100IV to get professional looking results or as a B camera.

Also, how close can you get with macro photography with this. Interested in seeing what focal length is used to get the best results with 1000fps at slow mo and shooting insects. Wonder how much light you will need?

The image quality coming out of these little cameras is insane. Seems like not too long ago we were talking about pixel shifting and useable 720p with $5,000 and up cameras...

I don't see any pulsating in 4k. Detail is really nice. Amazing what they did with this little cam.

Come on, it's not the wind XDDD
In the RX100 video, at 0:08, when the kids run away from the camera, don't you see the grass "re-shaped" in a pulse around half a second after the kid in blue has passed? It has "low bitrate" written all over it.
