Sony RX10 with 24-200mm constant f2.8 zoom and 1" sensor !

I don't think the RX10 is going to be the be-all end-all "best camera" for everyone in every situation. But I sure think it's going to be the ultimate "'second camera" for a whole lot of people. The price / performance|feature set is just through the roof.

Hoping to see some quality tests shot by a quality shooter real soon so I can make a decision on buying the camera or not.

This has to be the most frustrating part. Based on everything I've seen so far I've been ready to pull the trigger on pre-ordering this thing (which I've never done btw), but I have yet to see any video clips that seal the deal for me. All seem to fall apart with any movement, but then again seems like impossible to judge from youtube clips. Another link from the other thread: http://www.slrclub.com/bbs/vx2.php?id=slr_review&no=367

I have and RX100. For those of you that have not shot with and RX camera, they capture one hell of a mean still image. So lets imagine the RX10 next to any of the consumer video cameras and say that the video in on par with each other. Why would you not want the RX10 that is capable of taking a sharp wonderful still image? Then the RX10 also has an adapter for pro level XLR sound. Add the factor that it looks like a still camera and go out and get guerrilla shots in places video gets frowned upon. Add to that the ability to record uncompressed out.

If the video quality is equal to what I've seen from the RX100, the RX10 is a hell of a small package. Just waiting for this to be proven.

Ok, so it's supposed to be shipping this Saturday. I've NEVER pre-ordered something before, but I have a project this would be perfect for coming up. For those of you have pre-ordered a camera before, how likely is it, this late in the game, to pre-order and actually still get one of the first shipments?

Ok so from this article http://www.cinema5d.com/news/?p=22066, it says the A7R HDMI outputs uncompressed 8bit 4:2:2. I guess we can expect the same from the RX10. Sure it's not the 10 bits that we hoped for but getting 4:2:2 output from the total sensor readout shouldn't be bad for 1300$, do you agree?:)

it's already a published fact that the rx10 is outputting 4:2:2 8bit from hdmi. whether or not it will be a ninja-2 worthy connection has yet to be seen

Really? Even after Googling it once more I cannot find any info CONFIRMING it will output 8-bit 4:2:2, only speculation. What are your sources? The manual isn't even out yet?

And where are you reading 8-bit 4:2:2? Uncompressed could be anything really 8, or 10 bits, 4:2:0, 4:2:2 or 4:4:4, afaik uncompressed does not equals 8-bit 4:2:2.

From Sony's website: Connect via the HDMI terminal to transfer clear, uncompressed digital movie signal output from the RX10 to an external monitor/recorder simultaneously in real time. Or, for a cleaner view, turn off the shooting info display and watch your movies unfold on an external monitor/recorder.

No mention of 8-bit 4:2:2.

Dear friends.

I've spent 2 days shooting with the Sony RX10.

The full review coming soon.

Thanks.

P.S- I can conform from Sony engineering we are talking 8bit 4:2:2 clean HDMI output

thanks a lot Johnnie! Fan of your website, can't wait for your review!

I think the bigger question is how they send 23.976p over the HDMI. Not all devices like capture cards can remove pulldown on the fly from a HDMI signal. The sad thing is that the HDMI spec has supposed 24p for years now but no cameras ever want to support it. Even the cheapest Blackmagic cards support 24p I/O from HDMI. Assuming you can actually find a device that also supports it.

Can somebody confirm if the 24p feed from HDMI is actually 24p or is it 60i/60p with 3:2 pulldown?

as far as i'm aware, and i'm aware of very little sometimes, that 24p without pulldown is NOT a possibility on HDMI spec HDMI is a television delivery spec, not a camera spec, and it was just not made for true 24p and thus must have pulldown

Darren -> I don't believe that's correct; my Blu-ray player puts out true 24p via HDMI, and my projector accepts/understands it (displaying so in the input info). Neither are pro / broadcast / camera devices.

Not correct. Like Steve points out Blu-ray players output true 24p as do HDDVD players if any body can remember those. I still have one. Also all the Blackmagic video I/O devices will output true 24p via HDMI to a HDTV. I use my Blackmagic Thunderbolt device with Premiere and FCPX to output 24p sequences to my HDTV all the time. They would capture it as well if a camera would ever support 24p output via HDMI. If you ever hook up one system with a BM device and output a HDMI signal at 24p to another HDMI device it will capture 24p. I used to do it for our live HD web video streaming. We mostly used HD-SDI but my laptop used a HDMI only capture device. Our main BM Multibridge would output HDMI to me and HD-SDI to our other streaming devices at true 24p. You can also use HD-SDI to HDMI adapters such as the ones from AJA or Blackmagic that will keep the signal 24p for the HDMI output.

Hi Stu
A7r is on my desk. Shooting is planned for tomorrow.

Will publish footage very soon. (RX10 is next)

Thanks!

Johnnie

Johnnie,

If you have a 5D Mark III handy, please compare the A7R and RX10 to that standard of HDSLRs in terms of DR. Thanks!
