FS5: Sony PXW-FX6

Thanks for your answer !
I was +/- interested to get the Studio version for the noise reduction, which is not in the free one.
Will probably get it before the end of next week to get also the keyboard for the same price :)

Nothing more than a quick look at how the camera responds when over or underexposed, but some rough and ready handheld stuff from today with my son in the park if anyone is interested.

More details in the description. HD and 4k still processing. Give it a moment.

Ben - Cheers! It's good to see you back on here posting again! And certainly glad to read you are well and still active.
Footage looks nice. Thanks for sharing. And manual focus not-so-bad for this sort of thing. What FD to E adapter are you using?

"Daddy hug the tree" - takes me back to when mine was a youngster! (He's now 18... so as the cliche goes... be sure to enjoy every minute).

Yeah I had no idea he was a hippy until today!

Thanks and glad to back contributing (and hopefully shooting when lockdown ends!) again. :)

I'm using the Fotodiox which seems decent and is a great price. Very new to the FD lenses so learning what they can and can't do as well. Very different than most of the other vintage lens sets I have owned and worked with.

Very nice footage, Ben.

I put together some of my own tests today in S-Cinetone and Cine EI. I'm really impressed with how nice S-Cinetone looks SOOC. The times when I don't do any correcting/grading to footage are exceedingly rare, but S-Cinetone is making me think it might become more common. I realize I'm not saying anything new (plenty of others have commented on how much they like the look) but seeing the footage for myself has really underscored the point for me.

Coming from an Fs5 it's also nice to not have to worry so much about being even a tiny bit underexposed in slog. At 2 stops under the footage from the FX6 still looks good to me.

And usable—and fast—autofocus! Another really pleasant surprise. So far the only real downside is not being able to use S35 glass in UHD/4K unless cropping in via Clear Image Zoom (which looks okay to me in some preliminary tests).

Very nice video - I appreciated the in-depth narration and not just music

The 24-105 looks like a pretty nice 24-105

The only issue to me with the deep underexposure shots (like -3) is the color shift. a little more magenta-y?

Otherwise the clarity, color, dynamic range, sensitivity, autofocus, auto-ND all seem to be kicking ass

Great test video and a lot more helpful than mine!

Thanks! Yeah, the camera is certainly working as I'd hoped thus far. And meeting the expectations I had from all the glowing reviews.

And good eye—I checked the vectorscope in Resolve for the -3 shots and there does seem to be a slight color shift toward magenta taking place.

As for the 24-105, it's certainly more than adequate as an all-around lens for my work, and I do think it looks pretty nice. I just wish it were a stop faster and had servo control. But for the price and size I'm pretty happy so far. The only thing I can't really comment on is how the manual focus works, as I've been so impressed with the FX6 AF that I haven't done much manual focus testing.

Great test video and a lot more helpful than mine!

Thank you! I'm not sure about a lot more helpful—just a different set of situations.

It's nice to see the footage holding up so well to a little more aggressive grading in your other video. I'm used to having to rely on an external recorder for situations where I was expecting a heavy grade when shooting with the Fs5 and I won't miss that

At the moment I just keep buying up cheap BP-u30s on Ebay because they are actually quite handy for the FX6 and useless for all the other Sonys they ship with.

Been finding a few for £40 each so far.

Thanks for sharing but it does not answer my question. BP-U30 don't have D-Tap and USB port.

So we are investing in $6 - 10K+ hardware and pissing about the cheapest power we can get ....

Really a short sided view in my estimation ...

With a regulated dTap power cable you can run all day on generic V or Gold mounts ... run out of media before the lights go out.

Would those V or gold mount batteries be your choice if the small size of the camera was absolutely crucial?

V and Gold mount batteries have their place but they defeat one of the key selling points of the FX6: a small and lightweight kit. There's a lot of daylight between running e.g. a Ninja V off a BP series battery and doing so by adding on a V or Gold mount battery...

Agreed.

Of course not ... I have moved from Canon to Sony and factored in the almost 30% increase in cost to
use Sony batteries ... should I have a power related meltdown ... their fault not mine. They have been
burnt from 3rd party poor implementation that has supposedly fried electronics in the camera.

I have ... should FEDEX get though the storms ... a 35 two 60 and two 70's ... any of those and the camera is lighter
than my previous camera.

So running around for the day ... the 35 or a 60 as a backup ... for any longform ... rig rails and the gold mounts.

My comment was concerned with the variable quality of marginal ... and somewhat suspect players in the market ...
SWIT Watson Core Hawk-Woods and IDX excepted ... all great choices ...

Following is a review ... not mine but instructive nontheless

"1.0 out of 5 stars I really hate to leave this negative of a review but here goes.......

Verified Purchase

These batteries are at a GREAT price point and I so desperately wanted them to work. I would have settled for half as good as OEM and this would have been a five star review. Sony batteries without the D-Tap are $265.00. I bought this Kastar battery for my Sony FS5 to use in combination with my Atomos Shogun Flame. I figured I'd buy one, give it a shot and then purchase more if I liked them.

The first day I charged the battery, I used it without issue. It worked perfectly. No issues whatsoever. After the first initial use, I charged the battery and on my 2nd use (A paid job with client standing over my shoulder), as soon as I plugged the D-Tap into the monitor, the battery went completely dead. A fully charged battery went instantly dead as soon as I plugged the D-Tap in. I figured I might have a faulty battery and no big deal, I'lll just exchange it for a new one.

My replacement battery arrives, I charge it, I use it with my FS5 and my Shogun Flame, it works awesome, and I'm hopeful again. I fully charge it and I bring it out to my next paid shoot and literally the exact same thing happens. The 2nd time I use it, I plug in the D-Tap and the fully charged battery goes completely dead. No lights on the battery indicating power, and the camera and monitor completely shut off.

That's 2 batteries that died the exact same way. Are these like one time use batteries or something?

Not sure what the deal is Kastar but I just can't recommend this battery to anyone."

It does surprise me that Sony batteries are 75 - 100% higher than most other options out there ...

Personally, the camera is not a lightweight ... images so far above its small form that for me it is not a run and gun ...
if I want a small run around my RX02 or X-Pro3 will be in play ... and the image quality will suffer.

Forgive me but I find your reply quite cryptic. Thanks anyway.
