FS5: Sony PXW-FX6

I had this one, I sold it.
I think it's not parfocal, the FS5 compensate the focus when you zoom in and out, like the 18-110mm.
But yes it's an option.

Dunno. I just bought one for A7SIII. It seems like the minimum focus distance changes as you zoom. But that if you're focused further away, it holds focus as you zoom. Not sure

Hoping the image looks more like the fx9 than the A7s3. No evf is a big annoyance for me personally and seems to be the way of the smaller cameras - C70 has the same omission (although could be argued so did the fx9, fs7). Also hopefully you can turn NR off, not liking the smearing of the A7s3 in low light

Only one SDI (shared with RAW output) and HDMI, but it will have TC in/out, which is cool. Also it has All-I 4K. The only thing which is kinda meh is the LCD screen only 720p resolution.

If it's like the FS5, the MI shoe on the handle has the communication connector so you can put the Sony dual wireless receiver (URX-P03D), which give you two additional channels.

The FS5 doesn't have the option of 4 channels... it'll encode 4 channels, but 3&4 will never have any data. The MI shoe only gives the option of recording to either channels 1 and/or 2, assignable.

The A7SIII can record on 4 channels using the K3M and URX-P03D (into INPUT3), but it's a slightly fiddly setup and only Premiere can decode the files.

The dream is that the FX6 takes that A7SIII functionality and makes it simple and practical, but we'll see.

All I can say it's a very nice camera. Much improved over the FS5.

Yep - bound to be some annoyances (Long gop)

No XLRs onboard?

Nothing to power an EVF.

But yep as sitting in this boat..
1) my FS7 is too heavy
2) my FS7 doesnt AF

and this solves these things as long as the picture is as good as the FS7.

and with FF there are many affordable (but imperfect) options on the 'one lens' front

Agreed. really not much point to 720p in a 4K world.

However, most times, the lens' depth of field is easy enough to see, even on 720p. And a quick punch in focus check is used, even when rocking a 1080 monitor. So, I would let that stop me from being creative.

But yeah, 720p in this day and age feels like a waste. Sony should definitely offer 1080 screen in products like this. Before cellphones take over completely.

720 is fine .. if it is a true 720.

For example the FS7 monny is soft and the punch-in is a supercompressed upres of the soft signal - basically useless to check focus.

So there are many '720's - Im not expecting a good one!

I hope you are wrong. Monitoring is so crucial, and handy cams have always had completely useless EVF's and Screens. fingers crossed.

The FS5 was a beast on paper but not in real life... It's narrow DR, fake raw with the line-skipping slow motion annoyed me every time. The only good thing - variable ND's. The second - i bought it used for a 3500$ with a 24-70 lens+peli case and sold 6 months later for a same amount.

That's why I'm not believing in all these specs without the real world tests. I'm expecting lots of limitations in image quality like it was in FS5 for protection of higher end line.

As for me, the Komodo is the best camera in this price point today.

Per usual, anyone whom is a cinema IQ nut will most likely be underwhelmed.

Anyone whom doesn't care too much and/or is more interested in good-enough with a bunch of must-have features will probably love it. I would be in the latter group at this point in time if I were interested in a new camera as the best AF and ND filters are just too valuable over "cinema" quality.

It's going to be a great video camcorder.

It's a bread and butter camera. Just like my FS7 and FS5 this one will make me some money and that's what matters. Cinema look and such is not really interesting with the work I do. High quality video with an easy way to achieve shallow depth of focus is enough and on that the FX6 doesn't disappoint.

Agree. It's like a Dremel multitool vs separate pro tool set.
A7s3 is pretty same multitool which can everything except the color depth and cine motion. And for a much less money than FX9.
I would like to have a global shutter instead of full frame and 12-16 bit instead of 4K120fps with the sony's AF and ND's. Waiting for a next generation(

For me the FX6 check almost all the boxes. It will still need a bit of rigging (handheld work) but for corporate and some low-end online commercial work is awesome. I don't need RED cameras or Arris 90% of the time, when I do, I will rent them. Internal ND, TC for jamming, decent internal codec and body that is na plasticky (looking at you URSA) with relatively affordable media.
