FS5: Sony PXW-FX6

Looks good. The PL-mount solution is definitely what I need.

Just something to be aware of though, Wooden Camera are using their pre-existing Venice/Ursa Mini baseplate for the FX6, but when I asked the guys at Bright Tangerine about this (as they have separate adapter plates for the FX6 and the Venice/Ursa Mini) they said the FX6 is 1.3mm higher than the Venice/Ursa Mini (which is why they've made a separate plate for it).

Now 1.3mm might be within the tolerance of your Matte Box's rod clamps, so that you can adjust for it without hassle. But it also might not be. So definitely something to be aware of.

If you're using a clamp-on matte box though, it shouldn't be any trouble. 1.3mm is no issue whatsoever for follow focuses or FIZ motors.

Thanks for the links, I guess I'm not waiting for Vocas than... it's exactly the same setup I was looking for. On the WC baseplate, that's the reason I'm sticking with Bright Tangerine, they are cheaper and better thought out.

And you wont be able to nick thier Vlock to power your camera!

Personally I use BPU batts which are native in in Sony cams but I also have plates to run follow focus, small monitors whatever. I also have vlock which might run many items or larger ones.

Haha good point.

Anyone in the US by chance have an update on their shipment? Heard rumors of delays but just that, internet rumors with no solid source. Would be nice to get my FX6 soon since I just sold my FS5 that its going to replace and will either be shooting on an A7R II or renting till then.

According to the FX6 manual, you can output 1080i through HDMI. Will any Atomos record this? What's the smallest and lightest recorder I could use? I'm not bothered about a monitor as I'll probably be using a loupe on the LCD.

I'm curious to know what possible reason you would have for recording 1080i.

Shooting news. It's less than 10% of my work so I can put up with some inconvenience and the FX6 is perfect for me in every other way. Thinking about it though, an Atomos will be recording ProRes or DnxHD so not ideal for fast turnaround, which is sometimes but not always a requirement.

I've thought about shooting 50p and converting. I'm a bit nervous to go down this route though - the spec sheet from the station says basically "INTERLACED - you must shoot interlaced. Did we mention interlaced and how much we want interlaced? Cos it's a lot". It even says "Conversion from 50p does not work!" The thing is though, this document is ancient and is talking mostly about FCP7 and Sorenson. Was there a problem with converting 50p to interlaced that has now been resolved? Thanks in advance, Doug!

I’ve read some of the same rumors....one of
which says the FX6 won’t really arrive in the
US until June 2021! What I know for sure. I
called Omega Broadcast the day the FX6 was
announced to preorder. I was told they didn’t
even know about the camera yet and were not
accepting preorders. I asked them to let me
know ASAP when they were as I wanted to
preorder. A day or so later I for an email
from my sales rep giving me instructions
on how to preorder (it wasn’t on their
website yet.) I preordered a ‘body only’
version and was told that my name was
on one of the first units that they would
receive (I paid full price up front.) The
posted arrival date was Dec.15 in the US.
On Dec 13, I saw a couple people posting
on Facebook that they had received theirs
from Omega that day. So I emailed my
sales rep on Dec. 14th. I was told that
the people in the US receiving them from
Omega had bought ‘kits’ and that Sony
wasn’t telling them when the ‘body
only’ version would be shipped. My
sales rep estimated I might get
mine in late January, but emphasized
that was just an estimate. I have seen
Facebook posts of others claiming they
called B&H or Adorama and were told
January or February depending on where
‘In the que’ they are. So really it sounds
like no one knows but it doesn’t sound
like Dec. 15 is the delivery day in the US
any longer except for a very small number
of people.

I've heard from my EU Sony guy, that there are more than 2000 units back-ordered and the queue is getting bigger every day.

It sounds like those specifications are pretty old and outdated. If I was you, I'd go back and check with the client before I wasted any time or money thinking about interlaced. I really cannot fathom why anyone would be requesting interlaced footage in 2021. I honestly have not shot interlaced in 13 years.

Me neither. Every time I work for them I bring up this issue and ask for the ok to shoot progressive and deliver interlaced. They either won't commit to a meaningful answer or they just say 'Shoot interlaced'. I get the impression that the technical people don't have any power to make decisions and the managers don't know what I'm talking about.

Last I checked most broadcasting in the United States is still provided in 1080i or 720p, so assuming the news channel is for television (and not YouTube), it sounds normal.

Broadcasting in interlaced is an entirely different subject from shooting in interlaced. I don't have the statistics to back it up, but I'm willing to bet that most broadcast television, including the vast majority of local television production today, is being shot as 29.97 1080p. And when you broadcast a 29.97 1080p picture as a 1080i signal over the air it retains it's progressive look so there is no harm done and it looks fine. But shooting 60i and broadcasting it as 60i is damn ugly and I think a rarity today.

Motion, bandwidth, post, legacy equipment, contracts with service providers...all of that reasoning still applies for some.

There's no doubt progressive is better but all of the above factor into decision-making by people in control.

I still see some people on here comment about watching standard-definition...things sometimes take a long time to change, lol.

I spoke with B&H today about my order of the body only version of the FX6. I had placed my order 14 minutes into the preorder period back on November 18th and still didn't make it into the first batch to be shipped. According to the customer service person I chatted with, they're expecting the next batch of body-only FX6s to arrive on February 10th. She also said someone ordering today wouldn't receive theirs until March 24th.

My best guess is I'm receiving mine late January at the earliest. Not because it matters when January is more or less dead when it comes to work and especially now when people are hesitant to interact closer with each other. I'm not in a hurry and my two FS7 will do just fine until the FX6 arrives. It will take a while before there's actual request for the FX6. It arrives when it does.

Read today that FX6 has got Netflix approval...not that this matters to me - but to some of you it might. Definitely on my potential "buy list" for Spring 2021 (even before that news).

Yeah same boat on arrival here I feel like, just sucks because I sold my fS5 and now having to do jobs with my A7R ii or rent for now until it arrives. Not end of the world but still a pain at times. Was also hoping to shoot some high speed spec world over the next few weeks.
