FS7: Sony PXW-FS7 compatible batteries

$435 is a little steep for a BP-U90 battery and there are some after market batteries available for around $120.

I would prefer that the battery is fully compatible and that the FS7 would be able to display all of the information on the Battery Status screen.

Does anybody have any experience with another brand?

Yeah, the only additional batteries I bought were 2x Swit BP-U60 equivalents. They 'talk' to the camera fine, and give me all the juice I need for a typical day's shooting (around 3-4 hours each).

They're also great in that they have a D-tap and USB power out ports.

I shoot narrative and just shot an entire feature with three BPU 30's, the battery that comes with the camera. While list is something like $150, they can be had for a lot less from sellers who upgrade and don't need the stock battery. I got a couple more for under $100 for both. Not for event shooters, but great for narrative. They charge in about half an hour.

I have the Switronix EX-L96UD which says on the box it is 95Wh. As I recall it was listed as a L96UD at B&H without a manufacturer but appeared to be a Switronix from the picture so I bought it. I does work like the Sony batts and adds a power outlet. Charges on the original charger that comes with the FS7. I have not tried it all day yet but does show some really high number on the FS7 display. Sorry, forget the number.

Take it EZ,
Robert

I ended up ordering a pair of BP-U90 compatible batteries on Amazon for only $219. That is only $109 each for BP-U90 capacity. The PXW-FS7 is listed as being compatible in the description and I also posted a question to see if they really were compatible with Sony devices. Someone with an FS7 responded and said that they worked with his camera and that all of the status information showed up correctly on the display.

I just received them yesterday and they work as expected and the camera thinks that they are a Sony battery. Looks like over 6 hours of recording time is possible on a single charge.

I have no idea if they will last or if I will end up having problems in the long run so I will post another update in 6 months.

Here is the link if anyone is interested:

The new high capacity SWIT battery is shipping 6/22 - it is 86Wh capacity, same dimensions and features as the older S-8U63 battery. I was told by SWIT USA that they are getting the first shipment in two weeks from today.

Update: At some point the number of minutes remaining goes blank. I'm not sure what caused this to happen. Also, the battery, when left attached to the camera for a few days was drained quite a bit. It looks like as much as half of the battery drained away while the camera was turned off. It is possible that the camera uses battery when not in use but I don't remember this happening with the stock sony batteries.

I'll post more details in a couple of weeks when I have time to really figure out what is going on.

When I owned Panasonic cameras I had excellent luck with off brand or Ebay batteries- excellent life for the small amount paid. Since switching to Sony, only the OEM batteries have worked .

I took a risk and bought 3 Kayo Maxtar v-mounts. Kay..whatooo? I believe they weigh in at 2.4 lbs which actually helps counterbalance the rig nicely (i'm using the tilta vmount adapter for the fs7).

They are rated at 177wh and so far they seem to last forever. I'm going to be shooting a wedding on Monday (12 hours) and I'll report back as too how many I go through...I'm guessing 1 1/2 batteries. I'm also powering my Mix-Pre D off of the same battery (although I won't bother with the Mix-pre D for the wedding)

I'm also keeping a BP-U30 in the camera as a backup in case I need to swap v-mounts on the fly.

Just shot the wedding with the FS7 and Kayo Maxtar V-mount. One battery lasted the entire time! That's 6 hours of intermident establishing shots, preps, first look and then 6 hours of straight wedding. The v-mount still says it has 2 bars oof 4 left (14.7 volts readout) Pretty incredible...

I've been in touch with Hawk Woods, and their rep has told me that all their BP-U batteries work with Sony Chargers and in the FS7
