FS7: Sony PXW-FS7 are the colours correct?

Did you end up testing to see if using a Sony official Slog3 lut to see if it converts the cine colour space to rec709 properly?

So far I am finding nothing to complain about colour wise with this camera. It looks as I expected of Sony's line up.

Thanks for taking the time to test.

Thanks for the tip. I checked their LUTs and now red is looking good. Thanks!

It seems when using Slog3 that sony's luts to de-log are an essential first step especially with the Cine colour spaces.

My hope is that enough FS7s sell that lut makers start to make proper film stock looks from the Sony cine gamut colour space.

Sorry Osslund, this test is a complete fail. Your methodology is wrong. Your post-processing is wrong. Your conclusions are wrong and your advice is wrong.

In custom mode, he is right. In Cine EI mode, no. But I don't think that is what he is talking about in the blog.

Reds are wonky in custom mode on the FS7. But, the methodology used here is wrong. Also wrong are comments like "The advantage to the Custom mode is noise reduction and you can tailor the image under paint but you can’t use the on board LUTs on the FS7."

Which is wrong on at least three counts.

Just for the record, I said I agreed with most of his conclusions. I skipped to the end and didn't even read his methodolgy so I don't know how he got there. But one way or another, he got to the right place. Matrix will really trip you up with this camera and so will white balance.

Liam are you finding that you shoot in Cine EI more than Custom now?

For anything quick and dirty I've been playing with HG8 as it reacts the way I'm used to and has enough DR for most things. At least until exposing Cine EI becomes second nature.

I'm only shooting in CineEI. I've shot 16 days on it so far. 15 have been native SLog3.cine and on one quick turnaround job I burned in a LUT. No dramas so far.

I've got some time next week to test some other work flows. it would be great to get something looking good in Custom mode (haven't tried HG8 yet). If I succeed I'll share the method.

LUT off. Waveform in conjunction with a gray card (I use the lastolite EZ balance). I also have zebras set to 61 on an aperture of 3. I also pose around with a light meter and pretend to do math.

I really hope they sort out the Lut/WFM option cause I find SLog3 without look messes with my eyes for focus after starting at the screen for a while.

I just picked up a EZ balance and its been fantastic. I think I'll make up a quick reference card with SLog & Lut exposure levels to keep in my bag till its committed to memory.

You get used to it. You can always add a little contrast in the VF. After awhile you'll only need a quick glance at the waveform to give you confidence in your exposure. I also like to use the magnify tool to check the noise levels in the shadows. Better to lift an exposure, then have too much noise.

I'm not wrong. I just wrote what I found out that'll work for me. Either use custom mode and have correct red or use Cine EI and get correct red by using Sonys S-log3 LUT. Is that wrong?

I think the sony LUT is very very good - basically a standard start point to all but the most wild grades.

and also means clients might be able to take log footage as it is a 'one click' correction

The lut kind of pushed me to the camera!

Here I am agreeing with Doug again. :)

this is was a great test because it proves you don't get the same color gamut with slog3 in custom as you do in cine- where the LUTs match up.

Of of course that can all be compensated for, but my shooter (and me) had so much trouble focusing in custom slog that will try cine EI and over by 1 stop. Will try keeping custom for HG. If shot correctly noise should be minimal in slog cine (so I am told). It's just a different way of thinking for us video folks...
