FS7: Sony PXW-FS5 very quick test with Ronin M

Sony gave me permission to post, without password, my PXW-FS5 very quick test with Ronin M.

I used a sample unit of this little, great camera for only two hours, during the weekend stop of the FS5 Italian Tour (thanks to my beautiful daughter Marta for the precious help).
It's really very light (800 g. body only); I tried it with the Ronin M and with the very cheap Sony 16mm. f/2.8 pancake.

No editing.

Filmed in S-Log 2.
Graded in 20 min. in Premiere CC 2015

Looks great. That's internal, i assume? And did you use a external monitor on the Ronin, or just the FS5's built in monitor?

Yep, looks great! Must be internal as external is not functioning (on the units that have been seen so far in the wild). I too would love to know if it was 4K 8 bit or 1080p 10 bit.

Unless Sony's improved on the 8bit 4k XAVC-L that was in the FS7 by quite a bit, this will have been shot at 1080p.

Edit: Filippo confirms below that all but the Slow Motion was the internal UHD. I'm very impressed. This is much better than what I've gotten out of the FS7 in 4k XAVC-L.

That's hilarious, one of the best looking "goofing around" / "test" videos of a a $5000 camera in ages, and the manu asks you to put a lid on it.

Sony marketing, if they had any idea of what they were doing, would be making sure NoFilmSchool and Cinescopophilia had this in their inbox pronto. One of the biggest things missing from Sony marketing, is good taste and a deep understanding of what makes a pleasing image. And the differences between Japan and NA/EU markets as it applies to such.

One q, I'm thinking of getting an FS5 since I don't have anything smaller than the big A, there's no LUTs on a FS5, right? Slog just exists as a gamma choice in a picture profile the way the F3 did it?

You're welcome! Very impressed with your film - I remember years ago following my youngest daughter around town with a Canon 7D and a Steadicam Merlin - what fun!

Any other comments on what you thought of the camera in the short time you had it? Things you really liked or did not like? My FS5 is on order - can't wait for it to arrive!

Many thanks Nate!
In the sample unit I tried, there's no LUTs (Rec709 only), but I don't know in the final release.
Yep, S-Log 2 and S-Log 3 are two gamma choices and you can find them in the picture profiles.

I had enough time to check the camera functions (also at IBC in Amsterdam), but I had a very short time to use it.
The FS5 is a little FS7.
The variable ND is a fantastic tool.

Hey Filippo, nice gimbal work too. I'm an old steadi op, so I notice these things.
