FAQ Sony product cycle?

I'm currently on a F3 and starting to think about a new camera rig and was curious what sort of time frame Sony operates on for their product cycle.

I think it's 3 year cycle for cameras like the FS7 and about 5 years for the F5/55 Cinealta series.

Does this sound about right?

Interesting question, with competition like the Canon C700 Sony have probably shelved any new camera announcements for another year.

seriously though, the FS7 is a trickle down of F5/55 parts and I would think that's a profitable option going forward so I would expect a replacement/upgrade of the F5/55 first then an FS7 replacement sometime later.

Sony cannot keep up with demand for FS5s and FS7s so I don't think they would see the need to replace the FS7 ahead of the top tier cameras.

At least another year for FS7 and F5/55. New recorder for 5/55 recently released means it's not going away anytime soon. What we will probably see on IBC is a replacement for F65. This one is overdue and needs update to compete with Helium or Alexa 65. They might release two cameras actually: one with Super35 and one with large format.

sounds about right..

I'm not un a huge hurry, but it's on the horizon. In the end I may just end up with a used F5, because I need the heavy duty FZ mount.
I'm not sure I feel comfortable hanging a 14lbs Cooke off an e-mount with an adapter...

thx

Go with a second hand F5, this is probably the best bang for buck on the market now. Still going strong (and will be) and very flexible. Add raw recorder and you've got beast of a camera.
If you decide to go FS7, look at this:

Harry.. There is a 50/50 chance I'll be selling my F5 soon w/o viewfinder for around $10K soon. To answer the obvious question, no I won't be "moving up" to something else, more of a downsizing. I'll drop you a note if I decide to sell. Love this camera!
