I have a ex1r and thinking. Of selling it to buy the new sony z100 but I'd like to know from the folks here for some advice.
Is it worth getting rid of my ex1r for the z100?
Even tho my ex1r has less than 40 hrs use. Just wanted to know since I'd guess 4k is the new thing now. But would y'all sell ex1r to buy the 4k camera?

Luv to hear the feed back.

If the EX1R is making you money and fulfills all your production needs, then no, unless you will still keep your clientele with a Z100. The EX series cameras are very popular in productions. I work as a freelance camera op and XDCAM is a much requested format. 4K isn't that widespread yet, and may not be for little while.

However, I have no doubt that 4K is coming. The Z100 shoots in XAVC which looks to be an excellent codec, certainly replacing XDCAM one day. The Z100 suffers in low light situations, keep that in mind.

But for me, given a choice, I'd get the Z100. I like the new codec and the ability to do 4K. I don't have an EX1R, but I do have an HPX300. I have toyed with the idea of selling it and going for the Z100. Low light isn't great on the 1/3" chip 300 either, so that isn't much of a change for me.

But again, you shouldn't have to worry about 4K right now.

Also, let me add that you need to consider your workflow with XAVC. 4K will certainly take a lot more memory. Even its HD is 223mbps. Do you have the NLE that can handle the new codec?
But then again, if you get one, you'd be a pioneer of cheaper 4K productuon. You'd be the one we'd ask about for that kind of experience.

Vanvideo- thanks for your reply. It does have a lot of valid points that I'd need to weigh out. I haven't had any request for any 4k work so to get one would be just me venturing out into the un known. Also I'm really new to the video world. I'm a photographer turning videographer so there's ALOT STUFF I'm still learning.

It will really depend on your clients. If you plan on doing Weddings for example, When you advertise that you are shooting in 4K, it will for sure catch peoples attention. If you have a lot of Hollywood production coming through your town like me..Then you would want to shoot with the EX1R since it is still in high demand. Hope this helps.

I am on the verge of also getting a Z100 but am possibly going to pick up the EX3 instead.

Yes joeJITSU that deff is some helpful advice. Heck I may get one and just have the 2. However I know I won't be able to sync both

I'm not so sure about clients in general, such as weddings, will be necessarily seeking out 4k shooters. Yes it can be a selling point, but the majority of folk still have 1080 sets or less, and many still don't even have bluray players.

i would play the waiting game for at least a few months, this year is supposedly going to see lots of action in the 4k market and if you're getting good use out of the ex1, get more good use out of it until some 4k camera prices come down and plenty of people have come up with a consensus on their ability to be a workhorse.

Thanks your post does make a valid point. As to enough to make me hold onto my EX1R for a while longer to see how this all plays out.

Thanks

One of the reasons I am holding off on 4K is the cost of more cameras to shoot a wedding. So if decide to shoot a 4K wedding means I will have to make sure that the other 2 angles are in 4k too, so I will just stick with my 5D Mark II's and will trade in my XF camcorder for a EX3. My clients want EX cameras so that is what I intend to.do.
