Hi guys,

I've would like to ask, if somebody tested the new PL lenses from Sony. Are the any good? Better than CP.2 ?

Thanks!

Saw a demo from Alister Chapman at BVE on a 4K monitor, he first put a Cooke Prime on and then one of the new Sony Primes, the Sony was clearly sharper than the Cooke!

I've tested the 85mm prime very briefly and not very scientifically. My impression is that is a very sharp lens. Solidly built. A bit bulky.

I just collected my 6pcs Sony PL lenses on Wednesday...solid built, very sharp but heavy (average 2.2kg). Did a compare with CP.2, 50mm, CP.2 bokeh looks better, IMO, sharpness on both lenses are quite equal....the only plus point is Sony lenses are T2.0 throughout the six pieces whereas CP.2 are T3.1 - T2.1 based on the same six focal length.

Weight definitely in favor of CP.2 which is average of 0.8kg to 1.1kg as compared to Sony, average is 2.2kg. Price wise, the difference is just few hundreds for the six pieces but Sony delivers all six together if in-stock whereas, CP.2's 135mm will have to wait since they just started shipping in my region (South East Asia).

I have to agree. I like the CP.2s better than the Sony lenses and not just because I have them. Although I have never tested the new set. Only the older 35,50,85. But I heard optically they are the same. Some people complain that Zeiss is too sharp or cold and have no character. The Sony lenses are even more characterless in my opinion. Matter of taste of course.

I have tested the Sony V1 lenses against Red Primes (not scientific, just shoot the same things and compare). They are soooo close that I suspect that they are made by the same manufacturer (or at least the glass). Both are good for the cash and are sharp, accurate and "safe". For the cash, I think it's hard to go wrong. However, AbelCine who has all the scientific measuring gear needed, isn't stocking the version2 lenses due to not being in love. (alleged weird flares, color, heavy, etc.)

I think it's a matter of the cost:use ratio. I like them better than CP.2's (sorry Adam) but I like the Canon CN-E's better than both. (and better than Cooke's, and most Zeiss glass). When they get off their stupid EF campaign and make them PL, I'll run to the order-desk.

For the price of the Sony PL's, I think they are hard to beat: $3500 ea.
Are the Summilux C's worth the extra $180K? Check your cost:use ratio. If you can afford them and shooting well-funded features, HELL YES!
If I had them, I'd shoot 24-7 to justify them! :kali:
