Sony Pj710v Audio Noise

Hello Everyone,

I have the sony pj710v. It's mainly being used for documentary projects. I can't get rid of the hiss noise it records. The noise is well present while the gain is on low setting too . The Sony has two options when it comes to audio settings low and normal. On normal the hiss level is absolutely incredible.I have tried using good microphones like sennheiser me66, me88 and also audio technica wireless lavalier all feeding into xlr pro adapter and then into the camera 3.5mm audio input.
The xlr pro volume adjustment doesn't change the hiss noise in anyway.
My questions is what would be the most cost effective way to record good sound without noise? Can something like xlr adapter XLR-K1M be used on this camera? Or should I be looking at second system for sound recording? Maybe something like Tascam DR-60D. It just seems to me sound in a documentary is way more important than video.

Any input is appreciated.
Thank you.

What's an "xlr pro adapter"? A simple XLR to 3.5mm plug adapter could be wired incorrectly.
Most likily because it's a consumer camera with AGC that can't be disabled and inherently poor audio quality to begin with.
An external audio recorder may help if you know what your doing. Then you'll have to re-sync the sound to picture in post, manually or with software such as PluralEyes.

I'm assuming that it's the XLR-PRO from Studio 1 Productions. They don't make that specific model anymore, but do make other versions. It's a passive adapter. I had one of the original XLR-PRO boxes with a GL-1 years and years ago, and it was not the cleanest setup for sound (no thanks to the GL-1, but the XLR-PRO sure didn't help).

Thank you for your responses.
Alex you are right it's the older model very similar to the ones you linked. I am thinking about buying SONY PCM-M10 or Tascam DR-60D. There is grey area which I don't understand. When shooting documentary is it a good measure to always have a shotgun mic on the camera rig along with a lavalier on the talent running at all times? Am I at least on the right track? It seems to me the lavalier mic will cover most situations like let's say an interview. I just can't think of a situation where the shotgun would have advantage over a lavalier.
Any suggestion please.

Aside from interviews, the camera mic track is very nice to have for 'nat sound'.. b-roll and such.
I've mixed post sound on many docus and have used the camera mic track quite a bit... but not for dialog.

Thank you Rick. Sound advice. Alex might have had a very good point actually I recorded my brother's graduation on low setting 5.1 surround sound option on the Sony and there is no apparent noise on the footage. I guess the low setting stops gain. It must have been the xlr pro adapter that ruined the sound when I tested the sennheiser microphones.
