hi friends,

I read this is a really good to get. Anyone recommend a recorder primarily for recording sound effects. I do have a shotgun mic that id like to use with it.

thanks,
Chris

Which shotgun mic? If it uses XLR and requires phantom power, than the PCM-M10 is not going to be a good investment.

Read THIS.

its a noname brand from china off of ebay. works well with my canon xh-a1. the mic has a battery in it for power.

i skimmed through that sticky today actually. very helpful. my mic is xlr and uses its own battery so it should be good with the sony right?

The PCM-M10 does not have XLR inputs.

You might want to look at either the Tascam DR-40 or DR-100. If you're going to be recording primarily SFX, I think the DR-40 would work just fine for you. It does not have rotary level control like the DR-100 does, but it does have true +4dB line-level in by 1/4" (very handy for taking a feed from a mixer), which the DR-100 does not.

Of course, "no-name" and "China" and "ebay" are three things that I don't trust together in terms of microphones (or much else, really). But, if you're happy with the sound, that's what counts. One thing to note is that the pre-amps in most all of these hand-held recorders are not as strong as the pre-amps is better recorders and mixers, and some mics with lower output levels (like the NTG-2) make the recorder struggle to drive the mic. This results in lower recording levels and higher noise. You'll find that issue with both Tascam and Zoom, but Tascam tends to offer better overall quality in their recorders.

ok , ill take a look at the other options. thanks for your help buddy! much appreciated.

Chris
