Sony, or Sony? NEX-6 + 18-105 VS RX10

Call me bored and impatient on my RX10 preorder, but i just re-discovered that sony's coming out with that 18-105 F4 power zoom lens next month exactly when the rx10 is supposed to arrive.

Which makes for i would suppose an interesting comparison:

both with same focal range, both constant aperture

both smallish

sameish price

both solid performing sensors

both have plusses and minues as compared to each other.

etc.....

I'm no expert on the NEX cameras, but you fellas in the nex sub forum are. So which would you bet on?

The nex6 has the same sensor as my nex-5n. So, it will have a bit of aliasing/moire (not much), and it won't be as sharp (I actually like the balance of sharpness/softness of my NEX, the GH2 was too sharp, the T2i too soft). Its biggest drawback is the in-camera processing: the codec is not as strong as I would like it to be (it breaks with fast motion on detailed subjects, but luckily not with heavy grading of regular images), and of course it's not capturing the full DR that the sensor has to offer. I'm guessing the RX10 will be exactly the same for both of these things. On the plus side, it's a much bigger sensor and you can put a speedbooster on it which makes it FF in terms of FoV and DoF.

I would prefer the NEX, but they're close enough that I think many people would prefer the RX10.

edit: videos here

edit2: nex6 is same sensor as 5r, and image-wise same as 5n too, but 6 and 5r have in-sensor AF (only for supported lenses), 5n doesn't.

I think it's more a general question of taste.

Do you like the look of S35/APS-C sensor sized cameras?
You like the shallow depth of field and won't hardly use AF?
You like the ability to change lenses for special needs and more lowlight power?
Sharpness is not that important for you.

Here you go with the NEX Series.

You like the look and sharpness of traditional camcorders and S16?
Now and then you like to use AF and the build in ND-filters?
You like to have a 1 pack camera?
You need a huge zoom range (8x!!) with a fast lens?
You don't need that extra shallow depth of field of DSLRs?

Take the RX 10!

Even more picklish, throwing in the factor of heavily using it for video instead of photos, it's been awhile since i looked at what the actual consumer camcorders have been up to. namely the panny x920:

1/2.3", about half the rx10.
but... wide aperture of f1.5 nearly 2 stops better than rx10
both have BSI
x920 has 50% optical reach
x920 has 3 sensors
rx10 can go shallower, but 1.5 on the x920 can make things happen to.
rx10 has nd filter

this is why i love costo, they narrow down the choices for you

The X920's lens goes from f1,5 (wide) to f2,8 (tele) as max. f-stop...
Don't get confused by the advertising guys.

In lowlight the RX10 will definitely be better, especially if the lens not in wide position.

I need to purchase three cameras for multi cam music performance sessions on the sony end i was considering going for three RX10s for simplicity's sake but I'm also considering the NEX option... Then there's always the Canon 70D, My FS100 uses Speedboster to Canon glass so..... I have a tough choice to make.

:P
