Sony or Sennheiser

I'm interested in putting together an inexpensive wireless boom setup and am wondering whether the G2 or UWP would be a better choice. The G2 generally gets better reviews, but I'm wondering if the UWP's line input (I'll be feeding it from an SD MM-1) would make a difference.

I tested one of the UWP systems (lav and beltpack) and was not impressed. There was some hiss that breathed with the compander. I really like Sony's physical design on that unit... it honestly feels better than the Sennheiser. And the diversity receiver is a huge plus. But the Sennheiser just sounds so much cleaner.

Thanks. I've heard a lot of people mention the hiss problem. I was hoping maybe it might go away when using the line input, although I have no real reason to think that would be the case.

Not to sound snobbish, but I wouldn't even think of going wireless boom with anything less than Lectrosonics or Zaxcom. Otherwise, why boom at all, just throw lavs in and save your arms. Realistically, the benefit to wiring the boom is that you don't get the RF hits and dropouts that you get with wireless. If you take that away, then you at least want to make sure that you're getting the best quality audio you can, and the Sennheiser units just won't deliver that for you.

Phil -- Not snobbish, I understand. How low in the Lectro line would you say it's safe to go? Would the 200 series be okay?

Raphael -- I'm not too familiar with Audio Limited beyond general reputation. What would the 2000 and Envoy systemsbe comparable to?

MArk, I have very limited experience with Audio Ltd, but the 2040 system for my ears sounds way better than Zaxcom and lectrosonics. They don't have the whistles of Zaxomc, like recording, stereo or the miniature transmitter of Lectrosonics ( the actually has a new one, but I haven't touch it). I lost one of my lectrosnics wireless while shooting president Chavez in venezuela and production bought a Audio 2020 system from a french camera guy that was leaving the country, so I got to used for almost 3 weeks and I regret I didn't keep it. They sound really good. They are very expensive, so I guess if you were looking into Senn or Sony they are way out of the budget.
my question was more to ptalsky in case he has any experience with Audio that he didn't want to included it in the list of "good for wireless Boom"

oh come on.

At first im thinking you're comparing a audio lim system to a lectro 185..
but the fact that you're comparing it to a zaxcom which have
only been in the market with their Digital systems..

make me just chuckle at this statement. "way better" ..come on.

Even a hardwire doesnt sound "way better" than a zax or lectro 411.

The Audio Ltd. systems are pretty well the industry standard in the UK for location film and TV recordists.

Their range (ie: transmission distance) is better than anything else I have seen, but this comes at the expense of multi-channel capability.

Sennheiser is about the best for multi-channel.

In the UK most recordists will have Audio Ltd. systems and often Sennheiser G2 as back-up systems for when they need extra channels.

That's why I said "to my ears" because I know is a matter of personal taste. I don't use Audio because they are too expensive, but every time I use a Senn mkh 8050 with a Lectro 4xx I wish I have an Audio system with me. I hate the way lectro compress those LF.
I like hardwire WAY better than Zaxcom and Lectro too.

Speaking of "other" brands:
anyone familiar with "Mipro" (Mipro MR 90 VF Advanced) wireless systems?
Come around the price of the G2, but seem to offer true diversity...

Also "Micron" is a brand I saw lately, anyone know it?
