Sony offers new body modification!

Hi!

I was told by Sony they will be offering this modification. Looks very nice. You can choose between 3 stages. The only thing I am wondering about is the sound plugs on option 2 and 3?

Anyone heard about this too?

Roger

Woah... where did that photo come from?

Is this FROM sony or a 3rd party... also will they do this to existing cameras or is this only a New Order option?

Price for mods cheaper or more expensive?

All too many questions, but I like that its finally turning into a pro camera body instead of that stupid dinky VF and side handle thats useless. Looks like a smaller RED MX now.

This might be part of what the teased update was about... Please post details as to where you got this info!

Its for real!
I was at a Sony meeting today. Took the picture of his laptop:)
You send the camera to Sony, It will not affect warranty.
I was told about $1000 for the mod, so probably cheaper in the US as always.

Interesting, but how are you supposed to carry the thing? Oh yeah, that's what AC's are for. Not in my world..

I assume the XLR's have been relocated?

Don´t know about the xlr´s. But you probably buy a handle from someone else I don´t know. lots of mounting options on the top plate...But a good question.

Is this for real? I don't get it? What are these offering except the cheese plate at the top - if that's what it is.
How much weight does it add. They would be much better off figuring out how to get us 422 to a card that's for sure.

Ah very cool, ughh I haven't been to a Sony meeting in a while, I gotta go again soon. The only deal breaker would be XLR removal all together, which I woudn't understand. I hope they moved it to the back since it seems like tbe port box on the back looks bigger.

As for top handle and AC's... this is for cinema guys, not run and gun guys, so complains about not having an AC or buying a top handle doesn't really mean anything to the cinema world. We are used to spending $$$ on a mount, or having an AC lug it all for us. So no complains from my end, only a plus having more metal and better design for professional use on set.

If you want to be condescending at least try and not contradict yourself. You may be living 100% in the cinema world on a "professional set" but quite a number of us F3 owner/operators actually carry our own camera's and do our own sound. So for us this configuration may not be ideal as I stated above. It's pretty obvious to us "run and gun guys" who it's intended for but thanks for letting us know.

How was that condescending? or contradicting? I think you're reading into that too much, theres no use for that side handle or plastic top handle when trying to mount professional gear or use in a fully cinema rig. It just in the way or not strong enough to handle whats needed thats all that was being said. Its obvious this is targeted towards a specific user of this camera, so I was just refer to the obvious, that if you dont wanna remove the top handle... then umm dont? Kinda silly to complain about something thats a paid option.

Either way, sorry if that came out wrong, wasn't meant to.

If you have not been to the Hot Rod Camera website, they have been talking about doing something similar for awhile. I was on there other day they now have pricing for it and different configs. Although I think the pricing was in the $2500 range. It is in their blog section.

I don't know what this gives us beyond what a Berkey plate gives us, other than some customized look factor. I certainly haven't run out of mounting spots on the Berkey.

Besides, I want my AC to have both a hand under and a hand on top, so I like a handle. :)

I'd rather pay $1,000 for 422 at 50Mbps too.

I'm curious how much weight one would lose by shedding the handle/eyepiece + side grip + Berkey top plate and adding the Sony mod with their cheeseplate + a third party handle + a mic mount. I also wonder where the playback controls get moved to...

Looks interesting and a quite a bit cheaper than Hot Rod's option- though that one seems pretty comprehensive.

Space to mount things on the dumb side of the camera, like a Preston or a recorder. There's plenty of things that won't fit under the stock handle with a Berkey plate on.

Also, the aforementioned 3D applications, which I imagine are a big deal to Sony right now because there's a market for smaller cameras that can work in smaller beamsplitter rigs...the Alexa makes for REAL big rigs unless production can score the new split body Alexas.
