Sony NX5U and Panasonic HMC150

Do you have a Sony rep in the area? This sure looks like some kind of either operator error or equipment (lens) problem...There's some assumptions we are making but it's rather too stark a difference to be that all Sony's are this bad. It's possible it's a defective lens. If nothing else, I would return the camera, and send along this video.

If you follow along the thread, Mark discover he had a camera with a back focus problem... he borrowed the cam from a rep, and by the looks of it he got a different unit to test out.
To me Mark is the right person to make this comparison, He had Sony equipment prior to using the HMC150 (I believe he used the Z1u and FX1)... He has also used Z5, Z7, EX1

but anyway, I know is not an operator error! this is not his first time reviewing a cam! and he is very detailed on his reviews, and always documents his findings!

Mark,

Thanks for all your testing! I like my panny a lot, but i miss some of the features on the sony side (specially the location and quality of the LCD) :dankk2:

Sorry Super, but I just re-read this thread, with all due respect, Mark doesn't state he borrowed this from a Sony rep, that's your reading of this. He states, later in the thread that part of the issue seems to be back focus, but hasn't yet clarified the following shooting he did (since he apparently did it last night?). I don't doubt he knows what he is doing, but boards like this can be less than optimal for trying to sort stuff out, this typing is not always as clear as we would like, we all make assumptions, and you know that an assumption means something that can make an "ass of u and me". (G). Anyway, no offense taken or meant. I'll be curious to hear what the root cause of this is.

Hi 8string,

I think it was on a different forum that I have more details on the origins of the NX5U that I had, which was suffering from a back focus problem.

To fill in some missing info, our local Sony rep was going to do a presentation on the NX5U at our local video association. The NX5U was from Sony's San Jose Demo Pool. I picked the camera up on Friday afternoon and returned it to our local rep on Sunday afternoon.

After I came to the conslusion of the back focus problem, I reshot the comparison test in auto focus. The auto focus comparison test is what I will re edit and upload.

Hey Mark,

Thanks for starting this thread. The NX5U looks like a pretty cool camera and I've wondered how it would compare to the HMC-150.

I look forward to your uploading the comparison video. Thanks.

We received a phone call from a Sony Representative today. He wanted to assure me the NX5U should not have a back focus issue and we had a faulty camera.
He said they currently would not have a camera available for us to review until after NAB. We will follow up with the Sony Rep after NAB to more accurately review the NX5U.

No, he didn't say anything about the buffer overload problem. I have a friend in South Carolina that just got two NX5Us. He has tried to overload the buffer and they both performed with no problem.

I love the implementation and utilization of 2 SD cards slots, a pity the HMC didn't have this. But, and I say a strong but, there's still nothing about the NX5u that would make me jump ship. I'll be purchasing another HMC sometime this year.

The last few weddings i've done i've used the HMC and the DVX, i'm deffo over tape and SD material, my next few i've got booked i'll be renting a second HMC.
