Sony NEX FS700-4K?

Yea the footage looks OK...that video didn't give me much to go crazy about. Still, the specs are great and the slow mo shots look wonderful. Didn't know it would take a still at 4K, that's a great feature.

Would Sony be able to utilize the port on the side of the camera (normally reserved for the flash memory unit) to record the 4k raw? Seems like it would most likely be just a modified SATA III port which can do 6 Gbps. Would that be enough or even a possibility?

Thing about SATA3 is that 6Gbps theoretical max speeds, its not sustained write speeds. Perfectly fine for many computing applications, but obviously, when we are talking video sustained write speeds are crucial. I've seen sustained to be around 250MB/s in ideal conditions for SATA3, which may be enough for a lot of situations. I don't know what the F65 uses to interface with the SR-R4, it uses a dedicated multi-pin connector. For general video applications, there is a need to monitor, as well as record, as well as the fact that SATA requires different I/O chipsets from that of 3G-SDI. So it may not be the perfect solution. But it is possible, sure, we've seen several examples. Compressed raw, but not uncompressed raw.

Also, let's consider the media that its being written to. Bandwidth is one thing but it actually needs to record at a constant rate. Sony's SR Memory, uses RAID-5 configuration for its memory. Meaning, while its a 1TB SR drive, it actually requires a minimum of three(or four) drives configured in RAID level 5/5ee to make that single terabyte drive. This for redundancy and speed, and to insure those extreme sustained write times while protecting expensive data.

F65 is an extreme example. But we're getting into the extreme territory with cameras these days. We have a FS700 that does incredibly high-frame rates. I really thought that we would see a 1080/120p for a sub-$10k camera first, but here we are with much more than that. We've seen NHK with their 8K camera use 16 HD-SDI to record to 34 P2 cards simultaneously to record their 8k4k video.

Same here. Footage is ok. Nothing special these days. The slomo is the unique-feature here. Wondering if all the actionshooters will now step up from DSLRs. Quite a steep step though for those who didn't have an Epic already. But there might be a lot of EX1s for sale soon.....

It's ironic that the FS100 has only HDMI 1.4, but HDMI 1.4 can handle about three times the data rate that 3G-SDI can.

No 4k yet. Just "4k ready".

Exactly, also you can easily place a nd filter in front of these lenses. 1080p mode on fs100 looks excellent, at 10k this camera looks good but I would rather have an Fs100 fully kitted out. For tv and internet I feel 4k is overkill imo. Now if I were shooting film then yes, but as of now this camera wouldn't make sense to a lot of people.

For some of the outdoor scenes (lady in the car, motorcycle scene) what's up with the magenta color shift? Is this attributed to the nd filters, grade or what?

Off-course it's overkill. 4k is for theatrical film releases. And this camera will put the possibility to make quality looking like films in the low budget segment. Everybody is going to make features now!:)

i think its just their crappy color grading

+1

I cannot understand why in the world Sony or these testers choose to present the camera in such a way. Why can't people just shoot and grade video properly.
Here are some pointers when you make an example movie to help with the launch of your new camera.
1.Don't grade in magic bullet and if they did it by hand in a proper software then use a professional monitor or take of your green tinted glasses :). One more note on grades if you have no taste don't try to be artistic. Shoot good and well balanced video. Add some contrast (or remove it :) remove unwanted tint or add some pleasing ones (may I suggest warm red or yellow It may not be the most original one but at least it gives people a fighting chance to evaluate skintones (if its not overdone)

2.Don't burn the highlights when you record it makes every camera look like crap.

3. If you had the good taste to shoot and expose properly don't have the bad judgement to turn it to crap in post. (note:It wasn't the ugly blown highlights that made BSG a great series:)

I want to say that I'm thankful for their hard work but I am not because this video has actually not helped me one bit. And for god sakes What's up with the slowmo clips. A bird flying over a river really? A woman putting on lipstick? That really maxes out the usage of 240frames a second, none of the above examples would look any different if you did them in twixtor. And when mr Glencairn (Who I thank for his work on the log settings for fs100) talks about great latitude it just turns into pure irony when theres almost no shot in the entire video that has pleasing highlights(This has nothing to do with him personally more to do with editing and crazy bad postwork).

Please can't every camera producer learn something from canons launch of the c300.

And one last thing about 4K, at what price and at what filesize? If they don't present the price and filesize facts regarding the recorder they should remove 4k from their advertising because it becomes uninteresting. I mean I'd rather Buy a red scarlet and know what it's going to cost me then buying half a 4k system that I don't know the end cost is going to be. Last question if the camera is atleast 12 bit (since it produces 12 bit raw) why on earth did they make the hd-sdi signal 8-bit? Atlest the segmentation had some logic between the f3 and fs100 now it's just wonkyworld. The fs700 is both worse and better then the f3 with an unknown recorder of unknown price. If they do not present an upgraded f3 or a f5 they will have the most schizofrenic camera offering of all the manufacturers.

Um, well, yes. My guess is that they will do so soon!

F5 model that is similar but has better internal codec plus Genlock plus 10bit HD-SDI output seems natural, right?

Anyone know of any events coming up in the near future that are attended by large numbers of video professionals?

I guess that a potential F5 announcement date will remain shrouded in mystery and speculation... :P

Thanks for posting!

Hope to see more footages, im especially looking forward to have feedback of the Filmgrain , dynamic range, and the highlight roll off. First one is the one im lacking informations at the moment, seems indeed inferior to the c300 but do little has been shown for now...
Anyone early beta users care to comment about that point maybe?

...and by the time they release the 4k firmware. Oops! Oh Golly Gee... we have a NEW camera on offer in April 2013 that does all this and more and is 1/2 the size and Oh golly gee is even less than the 2012 price of the FS700. seen all this before. Run your FS100s into the ground. THEN worry about ramping up to 4K
