Sony NEX FS700-4K?

I might be wrong, but imho 4k raw should perfectly fill a 3G-SDI pipe, since it´s is only a single channel of luminance data. There is no colorspace.

3G-SDI transports 4 1080p streams, RGB-A or YUV-A, right? So it should be able to handle 4 x 1080p = 4k.

Maybe the also us a flavor of the SR codec, like in the F65, which does offer a compressed version of RAW.

face recollection is a really interesting thing (perfect for people walking towards the camera and not having to follow focus!). I guess would work only with Sony lenses or maybe any other lens with a smart adapter? Say metabones and canon once they get that all figured out... I film a variety of everything so I see this camera, once it shoots 4k, has a servo lens , it may just be the camera for me..... I have a feeling though, that as soon as they have this camera being able to do everything it promised to do that it will take till the end of the year (4k, servo lens, better sony lenses with 1.2/ 1.4 f stops). By that time a new Sony camera or Canon camera will be out that can do that all, be a tad bit smaller and probably even better in low light..

Why does the fs700 not have as well low light performance as the fs100? That right there, makes me most happy with my fs100. I would think that the fs700 being a 4k sensor, that once you shoot with it in low light and what comes out is 1080p would still be way better in low light and cleaner... like the c300.

Sony, great job on the camera, I am just not sold yet.... Maybe after a few more reviews, maybe once philip bloom reviews this camera (someone I can trust) and some sample videos...especially low light, compared to the fs100 and c300..

So far, fare price rumors, love the idea of getting a servo lens (that will sell me), face detection, 4k eventualy is fine.. but low light, it needs to be better than the fs100.

The low light sensitivity is not THAT different. Actually it´s surprisingly sensitive, given the fact they packet so much more photosites on the same size of sensor.

More pixels, doesn't that usually mean a loss in low light ability? I'll gladly trade some of the FS100's low light ability for increased resolution and the future potential of 4K. Even if the 700 loses a bit in light sensitivity to the 100, it still should be killer in low light.

And you don't trust Frank's opinion on the camera?

not THAT different.. is still a difference.. If its cleaner, thats great, that only means better low light sensitivity since it can be pushed a bit more (in my opinion) either it is or it isn't. And so far it sounds like it isn't... Not a huge put back for me, but it is something! ND wheel is great, in my opinion, it could have been in the fs100, but its nothing for me to worry about, my variable nd has done just fine. But looking at what cameras were out way before the fs100, Sony did what they did...

I have to see more before I get all wound up.

Well I do not trust his opinion totally. I would like to see sample footage, comparisons and see someone with a little more movie magic under their belt to do these comparisons, show sample footage.

If it's not compressed before it leaves the camera, it will still be a tight squeeze. This calculator says that with a 4K pixel size with 12-bit RAW (Bayer mask), you get a data rate of 2.55 Gbps at 24 fps, which just fits within the data capacity of 3G-SDI. Ironically, HDMI 1.4 has an inferior connector but a far higher maximum data rate (more than twice).

"Firmware upgrade when the recorder is ready"

To me that implies Sony won't play with others (Again) what a surprise. Not.

That´s right, but Sony has a record of doing Voodoo here. Like they managed to get timecode into HDMI.
When they say they can do it, I usually tend to believe them.

Hard to say.
First of all, it was a pre production unit - and I know that Sony is still optimizing in that area.
Second, the slo-mo get´s recorded in what ever resolution you set the camera, so there is no way to find out the real resolution in the metadata.
I guess we have to wait till we get the production units.

Awesome video! It kind of gives me chills! haha. I hope a vimeo version pops up with 1080p enabled!

No, it transports ONE 1080p stream (defined as 1080/60p). It's two channels of HD-SDI. So HD-SDI maxxes out at 1080/60i, and 3G-SDI maxxes out at 1080/60p.

If you were to limit your frame rate to 30p, then you could get two streams, but that's still only half of what you'd need for four streams (obviously).

To my eye, it looks like a little impovement with DR and much better light roll off. I am not seeing the yellow banding around hard lights that I usually see with FS100. Question for FS100 owners: Do you think the FS-100 could have done as well? (I am looking at all the footage with the sun or other hard light in the frame.)
