Sony NEX-FS100 with Super 35mm CMOS image sensor

HDMI is 8-bit. Sorry, guys.
As far as the list price, Sony products typically sell for at least a thousand below MSRP. Check out the MSRP prices on, say, an EX3, compared to B&H prices. Big difference.

The included lens is slow, but you can buy it without a lens. Get a lens adapter and put whatever you want on it.

based on current reviews,
the sensor is not as good as the f3.. but lets wait for more reviews.. f3 is 12 stops with s-log.. this does not have an s-log :\ high sensitivty wise, it probably is.
dual simultaenous recording on what? it has one slot. the external sony HD?

my take... great sensor.. bad body. (great evf/lcd though :D)

In what way is the sensor not as good? Sony has said it is the same sensor. I'm sure the internal processing is somewhat different though. I'm still not sure I understand the concept of S-log significantly affecting latitude, is the idea that for some reason when not shooting in S-log the F3 hard clips white 2 stops earlier? Seems quite unlikely that is the case. My understanding is that log or log-like recording is primarily beneficial in compensating for limited recording bit depth (what I usually call dynamic range, which is mainly determined by the limits of the recording format), rather than particularly improving captured exposure range (what I usually call latitude, which is most determined at the sensor level, except in cases of very poor internal image processing)

yeah the dual recording is to the sony 128GB flash drive that docks into the body. Seems like a good, if imperfect, *option* for simultaneous dual recording. You *could* pop in sony's $650 128GB flash drive and have production buy a $250 128GB SDXC card and shoot an entire low-budget feature without ever having to stop and format or backup media...

This camera should be able to smoke the AF100 as long as they address moire and aliasing. I don't care about the ND's as I already own them. But that sensor will fit my lenses a bit better. I bought a NEX-10 as a shallow DOF guerilla cam and I love the images, but it does moire and alias. If Sony takes care of that, we have a winner!

Some thoughts:

ND Filters: As I was saying from the prototype, there is no way that a S35 sized filter wheel would fit inside that body. Putting in a filter wheel for a S35 sensor is different from a 1/3" sensor. A filter wheel would mean that this camera would be twice as tall as what it is. Which leads to the second point...

Formfactor: Its compact. 2lb body. This seems to be an insistence on size from a design perspective. Obviously this means a lack of ND filter wheel, it also means that they want the option for user to hand-hold this camera. Its a modular black box with attachments.

HDMI: reputable Japanese site says it'll output 60 frames out of the HDMI, which is surprising if true, as 60p is reserved for dual-HD SDI/3G-SDI territory. It would be nice if they had some place to properly secure that cable.

Sensor: Dead ringer for the F3. Spec sheet says [PDF] 3.53 megapixel sensor with 3.36 effective resolution; same as the F3. Low light and noise performance seems to be untouched.

Lens and mount. I'm not sure what Sony's insistence in packaging that 18-200mm lens with every camera is. Yes, its a pretty looking lens, shiny and silver, but not the lens you want to be showing off this camera with. Fortunately, the E-mount is now open, so we should see a large variety of lenses and adapters available for the mount.

I don't think Sony is too happy about Nigel Cooper's review of their FS100 ( Sony NEX-FS100E review by Nigel Cooper ), as I just noticed that links to his review on the DvInfo.net and the HdWarrior.co.uk websites have "magically" disappeared, when they were there earlier today.

I guess that the "containment" elves are hard at work... :-)

I choose this camera over the AF-100!..i got my own ND filters.

Yeah, I second that. I have never been a big fan of Sony, but since the ex1,ex3, f3, and this new cam, my opinion has changed big time.

For my taste, this is a perfect camera, everything I have been wanting in a cam. ( I will miss the ND filters built in, but hey, at least now I feel I didn't waste money on the 4x4's I bought and have never used. I love the way it can be stripped down to a little box, or add the components you nedd for a given situation. The image is gorgous, Look at the skin tones. Their absolutly beautiful. Im not sure yet what the DR is. But it looks to be close to the F3. And the noise is actually nice with this thing. Im usually doing everything in my power to achieve a noiseless image. But from this camera, it looks like grain from a ground glass. My only complaint now is having to wait till late summer to buy it.

Im sure this is the perfect b cam for the f3 though.

Can't wait to see Canon's response to this. I see great times coming :cheesy:

What makes you think Canon will have a response. They usually march to the beat of their own drum . I could be wrong, but it seems to me these announcement don't impact what Canon does. Or at least they certainly don't make it public knowledge if so it does. Heck, if they did, we would be using digic 6-7 processors on the dslr's and camcorders now. Not to mention, they would have put in a decent size sensor in the xf series cams, or at least had a different model of the same cam with the bigger sensor. For all we know Canon hasn't found a way to get a clean image with the big sensors like pani and sony have. Of course it's all speculation. But hey, it's not like they haven't figured out there's a huge market for it, their the ones that moreless created the large sensor phenomina. And the popularity of it.

This camera looks really, really interesting. I had been waiting to see what RED does with their Scarlet line, but it looks like that won't even hit until end of the year, at the earliest, for the 8X fixed (at at least a $6000 price point too) with the Scarlet cinema some time after that. This Sony cam is listed on their website for $5800 list for body only, so probably around $5000 (or less) retail and is supposed to ship in June-July time frame (hopefully sooner).

I actually love the small, modular, Hasselbad-esque form factor. The lack of ND doesn't bother me as I shoot with a Canon 5D and have screw on adjustable ND filters. I hope they come out with a lens adapter for Canon EOS lenses.

The guys at F Stop Academy have a video blog about the camera and some of the first footage shot with it here:

and the music video here:

I think this camera looks pretty great!

Definitely interesting. Is there any sort of remote capability for controlling lenses? (Aperture/Focus) I look forward to seeing some video comparisons and more importantly to me, some rolling shutter tests.

The image quality from fstop video looks very f3 IMO. Though I'm not crazy about the design, if it ends being less than 5k I could definitely consider it.

I believe the Sony E and A mount lenses all have electronic control via camera. If you use other lenses I don't think you have electronic control unless the adapter somehow allows it.
