Sony NEX-FS 700 FORE

How do you get yourself ready for a golf trip to Scotland. Shoot yourself in super slow mo. My friend and DP Dave Sanders collaborated with me on our little golf test with a pre-production Sony NEX-FS 700.

We shot our spot at 240 fps, where you still get full resolution at 1080P. Set at Cine gamma 1, we used my Digioptical 18-50 T3, and Red 50-150 T3 PL lens with the MTF E mount to PL adapter. All on a Zacuto baseplate, and Chrosziel MB 456 Mattebox, and follow focus. I edited it in FCP 7, and used Magic Bullet Looks 2 to grade. A good chance to see how this codec worked in Looks 2.

We did shoot the CU of the ball at 960 fps, but did do a full swing. Just a tap for "TV", but it still looked real. To see any compression of the ball we would have to shoot at 10 000fps.

The second part are frame rates from 120 fps to 960. You can see the difference after you pass 240. I left these shots ungraded. I think an insert shot at 960 like the CU could work. Used sparingly, for emphasis.

Please be gentle critiquing my swing, unless your a PGA teaching Pro. :)

swing was a little iffy :) can't say mine is much better though

480 and 960 seem extreme unusable, like the fs100s 120fps :( but 120/240 was really nice.

Just speaking about the f700 output by itself, I have downloaded the original file, and i see some awfull color banding around highlight at some moment... Is it because of your color grading or a 8bit limitation or compression problem as you may not have record it to an external recorder?

Could you tell us please? This is a serious concern..

thanks

I'm concerned about highlights as well. You say this has been shot with cinegamma 1 but I still see some harsh clipping, even in the uncorrected shots. Did you bring the 109 IRE down to 100 in your NLE? The NXCAM footage does use the full 109 range so you need to bring it down before exporting.

@EOSHD tweeted this picture http://isgo.co.uk/fs100.jpg

and mentioned it in this blog post http://www.eoshd.com/content/7862/sony-nex-fs100-as-a-dslr-alternative-first-impressions

Essentially there are 2 issues which you need to be aware of with the FS100′s image:

[1[Editing or playing back native AVCHD direct from the card can result in clipped highlights and crushed blacks. This is the fault of your Mac rather than the camera. Converting to ProRes with 5DToRGB or using an external recorder are the easiest ways to avoid this.

[2]Some of the image profile settings on the camera ruin highlight roll off making it very sudden, burn highlights, introduce aliasing around highlights and push all the dynamic range the camera has toward the shadows.

Could this be what's going on here?

The cinegammas might not exactly be the same as on other Sony cameras.

The final shot uses Cine Gamma 4, which seems to hold the most highlight headroom with the smoothest rolloff.

CInegamma 4 on an EX Camera or F3 is the one with the most knee-like output. Maybe thats cinegamma 1 on the FS700.

What concerns me is the awful amount of aliasing on his basecap and shirt which is very canon style. Maybe bad quality output from the NLE?

Magic Bullet could also be the reason of this highlight problem.. I would just like to know if it appear in the raw footage or not.. :)

For some reason DVX was not letting me post this morning. Weird. There does seem to be some bits of colour banding I saw in the highlights, and there is definitely aliasing, moire issues. Not sure if better work in the picture profile would help some of that. I don't think I had all the settings optimized. It was a very quick 24 hrs getting the camera at the last minute. I will post the original edit ungraded.

Was your detail setting too high? Maybe it should be dialed back. The amount of aliasing in those shots is shocking !
I hope sony didn´t choose the wrong OLPF...

Why is everyone who has been able to demo this camera so far focused entirely on slow mo? I would much rather see how this camera fares with IQ. So far in this area I can't see a lick of improvement over the FS100 (except, perhaps, for what Frank has said about the improved gamma curves). It's almost like Sony has made them agree to post slow mo clips in exchange for demo-ing the camera.

In theory, the image frm this sensor should have much higher resolution at 1080p than the (poor) FS100, but I can't tell from any of the clips I've seen yet. I just hope the next person to demo this camera doesn't spend any time on slow mo, but does a nice side-by-side with an FS100, focusing on color accuracy (especially reds), skin tones, highlight rolloff, DR, and resolution.

Just so you know, there was no agreement to post slow motion with Sony. I own and F3, C300 and others, and my draw to this camera is the slow motion feature set. That's why I would use it. I'm sure others will do those side by side tests, but its features like super slow motion in 120 and 240 fps at 1080P has not been accessible before in a reasonable price point, and that stands out and makes me want to take a look.

With more time comes opportunities to look into those profiles.

Since I'm not a colourist, I thought I would upload the golf sequence ungraded. I played in Magic Bullet Looks 2 for the graded , but there are many ways it can go. I did a look that I thought would work.

I only had the camera for a short time, and didn't really get a chance to really look at the picture profiles, or even have a manual. I set the camera to cinema, cine 1 gamma, as I thought it was the flattest profile, like the F3. I might be wrong. I also turned the auto knee off.

Also remember this is a pre-production model, and pretty sure the firmware has not been set for every region.

Thanks for uploading the ungraded footage Nigel!

Now since you own a C300, can you do a comparison with the FS700? I'm curious as to how close is the FS700 in terms of resolution compared to the C300?

I had to give the camera back with less than 24 hrs with it so they could take it to NAB. I'm hoping I can get it again to have more time to look at it in all modes of shooting. But I think its going to continue to have a lot of attention after NAB, so I'm hopeful, but know its a longshot to get it for an extended period of time. We'll see

Yes that would be great.

What's your opinion based on your limited time with it on how much resolution can it resolve?
