A Deeper Look Into MPEG-2 Encoding Reveals a Versatile Compression Scheme
By Steve Mullen

At NAB 2005, Sony will show a working model of an HD XDCAM camcorder. According to Sony, the company is considering producing, initially, one of two versions. One would use 1/2in. CCDs and record 4:2:0 VBR, long GOP MPEG-2 at 36Mbps. One hour can be recorded to a single-layer XDCAM disc. The second version would use 2/3in. CCDs and record 4:2:2 VBR, long GOP MPEG-2 at 72Mbps. One hour can be recorded to next year's dual-layer XDCAM disc. However, these new camcorders will not be HDV camcorders.

It could be worse. I mean, MPEG2 when we get right down to it isn't all *that* bad. Drop outs suck... as does the damn resolution loss in fast moving objects. The upside? You can theoretically get more quality for a given bandwidth (as you're recording only the changes between frames and the I frames of course).

Is it enough to justify MPEG2 as a legitimate acquisition format? I don't know. If they could record to something other than tape - eleminating the drop out problem - then yes I can see it. I would be hesitant to use in for anything (such as run and gun reporting) that you couldn't have several takes of.

question...

and mpeg 2 really isnt that bad after time even faster computers will be out and more dense mpeg compression will be here(colors and details more n more)

back to the ? is hdv a mini dv format? if that is the case then it makes lots of sense to be a failure on purpose, just to get people talking about hi-def, and panasonic and some companys not playing the marketing game and screwing people, if hdv and mindi dv are tied then this would be all a literal scam(tape dropouts) I love the electronics industry =)
