Sony Movie Studio 10 PE - Render only uses 20% CPU

Just bought a new laptop primarily to help speed up my render times in Sony Movie Studio HD 10 PE. I almost always render using the Sony AVC codec and on my previous laptop (Core2Duo 2.16GHz, 2-core) it would max out both CPUs and my computer would grind to a halt. Now I've got an i7-2630QM (Sandy Bridge, 4-core) and when I render the total CPU util only goes to about 20%. The computer is still really responsive, but the render times aren't that much better than on my previous computer. When I check to see which processors are being used in "task manager" it seems like it's using a little of all of them. Hyper Threading is enabled, so Windows actually shows 8 processors.

Anyone else experience this? I thought this version of Movie Studio was multi-threaded and would max out all 4 cores? Thanks for any help of suggestions!

it's the way SonyAVC seems to work as i've learned. i have the SB 2600k overclocked to 4.6ghz, and i ran into the same problem. I thought i did something wrong...

i now render to MainConceptAVC at 20Mb/sec and all is well. No visual difference between MC and Sony to my eyes at this level of software, but i'm now getting 88-98% CPU rendering on all 4 cores/8 threads, and the fans are blazing!

so give Main Concept a try, and make sure you have your preferences set to 8 rendering threads if you want the absolute fastest renders, as your processor supports it. the default max threads in 10PE is 4, so you may have to enter the Internal menu in Preferences by holding Shift when you click Preferences....just be ULTRA careful when you access the Internal menu, as it's a (sort of) hidden function and only to be messed with at your own risk.

good luck!

Great! Thanks for all of your insight! I didn't know about the "internal" menu. I see some options in there for 64-bit. Is it possible to run Movie Studio 10PE in 64-bit? How do I do that?

as far as i know, 64-bit is a no-go in MS PE10...the Internal function is probably the same for all vegas versions, but some settings are reserved for Pro. Ive tried to change a few things with no success. However, somehow, i changed the UI to white, like older Movie Studio versions, and now i can't remember how to return it to the Grey default without Defaulting EVERYTHING haha...that's why i stopped using the Internal menu. :-)

Chris -

to get back to the original dark colors go to the Internal tab and enter "color" into the Show only box. Then change Use Vegas Color Scheme to True.

I've set it to False because on my monitor the overall contrast is much better with it set to False - this gives what you call the white color scheme but it is actually just a brighter set of gray shades.

There are a lot of other color-related options there; I wish I knew what they did. One thing I did change was the colors for the time box. The foreground and background colors are controlled by Time Text Color (Active) and Time Background Color (Active). I set mine to FFFF and 88 respectively which gives yellow text on a brown background.

hey man, thanks, i actually figured it out after i posted that haha...good lookin out!

thanks for the extra info too...i've been wanting to try making the whole UI darker, but i havent had the cajones.

Hi there try this, unless you have already. Go to Options>Preferences>Video tab. You will see a listing at the top called Render threads. Max that out as high as it will let you. If I recall you will be limited by the number you can input due to not being pro, but if you have 4 cores I would have a minimum of 4 threads. Also look at the amount of dynamic ram you have listed just above that. That may also need to be increased if you can. Hope that helps.

this is correct, however, Movie Studio won't let you enter more than 4 rendering threads in the preferences area, but if your processor has 8 threads, then you can change it in the "Internal" menu. after you change it in the internal menu, go back, to preferences and it will allow you to enter 8.
