Sony mini-DV tapes not playing on the HVX200a??

Hello,

I'm digitizing some footage that was shot by a friend and the footage was shot on two different cameras, one was a HD panasonic (possibly the HVX200) and the other two tapes have footage from some lesser quality miniDV camera (but still a nice one).

I put in the panasonic tape first, captured it fine and it was all good. Then, I moved on to the SONY mini-dv tapes and it wouldn't read timecode and further more would only show blue.

Now, it's possible that he didn't even shoot it correctly but I am thinking that the HVX200a is just not reckognizing the sony tapes right, even though that doesnt make a lot of sense.

Is there possibly a switch or something i need to change on the camera first? Any ideas? THANKS SO MUCH!

if the sony footage is HDV format. the panasonic wont see it. nothing but a sony hdv cam/deck will see it.

and there is no panasonic camera that shoots HD to mini dv tape

Ok I've found out more-

The two Sony MiniDV tapes have footage on them that was shot with a Canon XHA1 (HD I think).

Does this mean the footage on the Sony tapes are HDV like you said, and also would I still need to find a Sony HDV Cam/Deck even though it was shot with a Canon?

Thanks!

Another thing to remember is to clean your tape heads if you are switching tape brands around, especially Sony/Panasonic. They use different materials to create the tape and they are not compatible. It will actually make a gluey moosh when they interact. Not good for your gear. You can interchange them without issue as long as you run a cleaning tape through before you switch.

Good advice, thanks Take_1. Any ideas on my issue based on the new info I got above?
It sounds like what others have said on this thread. That the footage may be HDV. That would explain the blue (non- compatible) screen you are describing. Make sure that your playback unit is supporting all the formats your are trying to play back. I know for sure that some formats won't play nicely across the whole field.
