FS5: Sony make official statement on ‘perceived’ FS5 image quality issues

I was not aiming at you Nirv, sorry if it sounded like that. I'm saying in general, comes from my experience dealing with people that had a chance to work or own FS7. Of course those statistics were made on a spot: I haven't yet met a person that was understanding it correctly but I'm sure there is someone (thus "90%").

So on the fs7 cine EI mode is always ISO 2000 even when you chose the DB? We just got one at work and are working with are editors to try and figure out the best workflow for us all as what mode and how it should be shot for the editors. Also thinking about the FS5 as a B cam but might wait and see what all this fuss about the noise issue is about.

Yes, treat it like a film stock negative that later on you have to develop (and you can push it or pull it). Better shot with custom mode if you're not sure about it, also safe bet for matching it with FS5.

I didn't see this posted in the thread (though I may be wrong), but this guy does a good job of showing the limits before breaking the codec, and comparing to other cameras. He even compares internal vs Shogun recorded. It's long, but if you're hungry to see a lot of variations, this is good. The guy also cracks me up.

So i suppose the real question is if the FS5 is better than the C100 with an external recorder. And the C100 with external recorder would save u a couple of thousand dollars.

Ive returned my Fs5 Ill stick with my C100 thanks.

Surely that mainly depends on whether you want/need HFR, 4k and/or log, no? I find it amusing how simple everyone seems to want things to be. You rarely hear other conversations along the lines of "which is better, a pair of Nike running shoes, or a pair of converse all stars?" (although ironically, the answer there IS clear).

HD Warrior has an update, with an official response from Sony acknowledging a problem with a timescale of February end for a fix: http://www.hdwarrior.co.uk/2016/01/27/sony-have-admitted-problems-with-the-fs5/

I guess we weren't "doing it wrong" after all. The official statement follows:

"Sony has investigated the PXW-FS5 image artifact issues reported by users. Our engineers have been able to duplicate these issues and identify their root cause. Sony plans to provide a firmware update. Our goal is to issue this revised firmware toward February/end

To ensure that users achieve the best results from the FS5, Sony is also preparing guidelines to help professional shooters take full advantage of the FS5’s features, including S-Log and S-Gamut’."

I wonder who else might pedal backwards a touch in terms of their responses to people's issues with the camera...

You are assuming there's any back peddling needed.

What if the firmware fix is an 'Off' switch for the NR and a guideline that clearly states ridiculous levels of gain causes artefacts?

You can create similar blocky tearing artefacts in NeatVideo when you play with the temporal noise reduction. You can kind of guess what Sony will do, Lo/Mid/Hi settings that will reduce the NR effectiveness and let through much more noise as you can simulate in NeatVideo.

It was more the fact that a few individuals that a lot of members of the Sony community on DVXUser give credence to were stating repeatedly this was purely an issue of user error and/or absurd expectations.

For Sony to acknowledge is a step forward, but does leave said individuals looking silly.

Well we'd both be speculating here, but I suspect that it won't be a matter of an on/off switch. Just like in those NLE's noise reduction filters, there are multiple parameters that can be tweaked, it's not just a choice weak, medium, and strong. I'd guess that they might be able adjust the "motion sensitivity" of the FS5 temporal NR to reduce the edge tearing.
