FS5: Sony make official statement on ‘perceived’ FS5 image quality issues

Did people perceive them by looking at the footage?

The level of condescension in that statement is amazing. It took me 3 months of arguing with them about a light leak on their A7s lens mount with long exposures where they kept on saying it was user error until they finally said yes the it has a leak and that instead of them offering a solution stated I should instead wrap their brand new flagship stills camera in gaffa tape and elastic bands. Shocking customer service.

Heh - If they were only "perceived" there would be no statement at all.
Good to know they are aware and working on it!

Statement issued from Sony Japan? Maybe perceived got lost in translation?

Sony did have to acknowledge this and make any kind of statement, glad they have its being looked into by their engineers. New firmware on the way

Culturally, their acknowledgement of the problem is a big deal. Do not underestimate the statement. You can be sure that they are working on it. Whether it is solvable with the current hardware as configured is another question.

Its a statement written by a lawyer ..in the states Im sure.. if its not worded as perceived .. then they admit there is a problem.. and would have to Call Saul ..

Spot the lawyerspeak, the treading carefully and the dancing around a class action or something along those lines.

I suppose give then their due, they did publicly acknowledge and have said they're looking into it.

Looking at Andrew Reids stuff there's certainly some odd macro blocking going on (B frames giving after images). I suspect the in-camera noise reduction. Make you wonder how noisy that sensor would be at 3200K with no processing.

I don't have a vested interest, so sitting on sidelines watching this one.

cheers
Paul

If the FS5 sensor and accompanying electronics are as noisy as the FS7 then I can assure you that NR in the FS5 is working a miracle.

Maybe one of Reid's devotees should ask him to repeat his tests with an FS7 back to back with an FS5 and maybe the macro blocking NR artefact won't be seen in the same light, excuse the pun. The FS7 can be extremely noisy and even 6dB is too much let alone the amount of gain some of the complainers have been using. Maybe Reid could show examples of other professional cameras that can be used with enormous levels of gain without any visual impact.

It looks to me like the FS5's NR uses an unsharp mask type of algorithm to determine where the NR should be active and it's at the crossover point between sharp and soft areas that the NR artefact becomes visible. Sony may be able to tune the threshold slightly but what they can't do is defeat the physics of the particular sensor in the FS5 and the cries that the A7S can go up to a quarter of a million ISO without the same artefact is no argument at all, the FS5 is not an A7S.

But what is accounting for A. Chapman, The Doug, and other.." non Sony Expert types.. " to have totally fine pictures and no problems .. compared to these horrible images others have shown.. 1 the people having the problems are incompetent with setting up the camera and /or including low quality lenses 2 There has been a batch of "faulty" camera,s.. sensor or other problem in the guts.. 3 the people seeing problems have some sort of workflow/play back that is sub standard .. or wildly over optimistic expectations of what the camera can do..

Im not saying is most likely to be one more than the other.. no idea.. dont have the camera.. but just as a logical summary of the situation..
