I got adapter sony and 16-50 . And I do not know what to think . First of all zoom ring is very hard to turn , and in 35mm I feel like is sliding . I do not know how exactly explain it , but I think you know what I mean . It behave like my 18-200 , when I zoom in it does not want to hold focus . So first I have to zoom in and take a proper focus and after that I can zoom out holding focus all the way .
Another thing which I noticed , when I use autofocus it goes to f3.5 ,but actually it looks almost like f4 . I compared to kit 18-200 . Is there any photo lens which give me smooth zoom ring , nice aperture ring , f 2.8 or f3.5 , wide like 18-55 . Which can hold all the time focus ( parfocal ) ????????

Having got back into shooting after well over a decade doing animation it took me a while to adjust to rather disconcerting world of varifocal lenses.

Having said that I have never been embarrassed by the 18200. It is supposed to be parfocal according to Adam Wilt but when you apply torque to the zoom wheel the image does blur at long focal lengths. My (2nd) 18200 holds focus all the way in and out apart from when in motion for the reason stated.

The leap I made was to think of a zoom lens as a variable prime, select your focal length then focus up. You'll have to get used to using the magnification button as second nature for checking focus. Also a better viewfinder/monitor is an almost essential.

There are many manual photo lenses with lovely zoom, many of the older manual Nikon range are incredibly well built. I miss my 35-135 and I'm going to buy another asap. Not parfocal but a lovely smooth action. If you get a well built NIK/NEX adapter it'll have a smooth aperture control.

Maybe also move away from zoom lenses and consider building up a set of prime lenses and leave video style shooting behind altogether. It depends what you are shooting but I think the rewards outweigh the hassle.

There are parfocal lenses out there but not many due to the reliance on AF on stills cameras.

I shoot docu , and sometimes there is no time to change lens . I hope sony will give us nice 19-70 f2.8- 3.5 oss . Roadmap says about G lens in beginning of 2013 . I understood good optic is not everything , when I got prime contax zeiss C/Y there are so nice almost perfect .There are very well build . Using focus ring is pleasure . Aperture ring click but one day I will de-click them . Contax zeiss has some zoom ,but nothing wide like 19-70 any way I will try with one of them . Choose camcorder was easy , but lens is like nightmare .

The closest I have got it a 35-70 3.5 manual nikkor paired with the 18mm nikkor prime

not one lens 'does all' but two

Both lenses are mechanically excellent for video work

There is a similar design 28-85 that is 3.5-4.5

Other options maybe a 18prime plus various other 28-70 manual zooms (ang/tokina contax) this focus the 'normal' way
