Sony Introduces World's First Full-Frame Lens with Power Zoom, the FE PZ 28-135mm f/4

They said in the fall. The new 28-135 servo zoom comes in December, so my guess is that the firmware will coincide with that. I'm sure Sony wants to sell their new €2500 lens to FS700 owners too...

As far as I can see, this lens is clearly aimed at FF cameras as the A7s or future FF models.
If they'd want to build it for S35 cameras they would clearly have begin with a smaller focal length.
It's just too long for S35 with its 28mm wide end...

Yes, it's a nice lens for the money, but not for us S35 guys. I'd rather use the Canon 25-105 with
a speed booster even if it's a compromise too.

Idk I guess this is really good for eng style shoots? When was the last time anyone missed zoom with their dslr? Idk for instance for my wedding work can't say I need it.

Well, that's where we differ. I find it too wide and would rather it would have been, for example, 50-150.
I think it's a great focal length for S35. But the only situations I use servo lenses is when I film live performances on stage, then reach is good so I can be out of the way in the back.

What I'm saying is that to you it's bad focal length. To others it might be just perfect. And I guess it's a good compromise for both FF and S35.

I don't do ENG stuff. But for filming live shows with only one or two cameras where you can't hide zooms by cutting to a different camera, servo zooms are invaluable. Very difficult to get nice useful zooms by doing it by hand.
I've filmed one show since selling my 18-200 PZ together with my EA50, and I really missed it!

And there is already the 18-105 and 18-200 power zooms that cover wider ranges.

The 18-105 f4 G is a SOFTWARE lens - it can not (easily) be used without a camera body doing distortion correction.

AND NOW FOR THE BAD NEWS...

Check out the slides from Juan Martinez, and pay special attention to the ones on the 18-105 f4 G halfway down page 1:

QUOTE: PXW-FS7 supports distortion compensation up to HD 60p **or lower** !!!

So you want to use the 18-105 for 4K?? For slow motion?? Forget it.

And based on that, chances are very high that the upcoming firmware v4 for the NEX-FS700 will have the same restrictions... lens corrections up to 1080 60p, and nothing more. After all, the FS700's processor is 2 years older that the FS7's, and distortion correction does take processing power.

The 18-105 is one of the most puzzling lenses ever released. It's clearly designed for video, so why not make it $1100, and make it a great lens that does not require distortion correction under any circumstances? As it is, most of the people who would like it the most can't even use it.

Great find JuanDiaz!

I agree with you, I have been baffled by the 18-105 as well. Making their first servo zoom (after the EA50/FS700RH kit lens) not compatible with their video cameras was a dick move by Sony.

Regarding the 60p limit that wouldn't really matter in my case as I don't need higher frame rates for situations where I would use a servo zoom. But it's very good to be aware of the limitation!

I third the opinion. I bought the 18-105 right after it became available at B&H. Seemed perfect for the FS700 as a R&G lens....nice focal length. decent Fstop (2.8 would be better but
still F4 isn't bad since it's constant), good autofocus, nice OSS, lens doesn't extend...and absolutely great price. Well the lens worked perfectly on my B camera the VG 20.
But on my FS700, there was the horrible pincushion effect. It's really a shame, because everything else about the lens was pretty much perfect, it worked great with the zoom
rocker on the FS700 and honestly if it didn't have the pincushion effect, I would probably pay $300 more for it......but no such luck. It only worked with the 'stills' bodies.
Why oh why would you bother making a video centric power zoom lens, and then make it only work on stills bodies and exclude the FS100 and FS700? It really seemed
strange to me and I ended up getting a refund from B&H and sending the lens back.

I had exactly the same experience. Loved the lens for size, IS, constant F-stop, constant length and
the nice price. But after one day testing it, I just returned it immediatly. So sad.

That's Sony - always changes something sothat you'll need the latest model cameras to use their stuff...
