Sony Introduces 61 Megapixel α7R IV

A9II is likely to be the next Sony camera announced - one of four ID's already registered - and these sensors have barely been leaked. On the other hand, it may indeed be a tad too ambitious for RP. Canon might have to cripple its video and frame rate capabilities. But it looks to be a good fit for A7 IV. After all, there is a $700 price gap between the two. And there're Z6/S1 too, though they may have to wait.

Like I said above, it's a rough outline for what's in store a year from now. Takes a lot of the pure guessing work out of the debate.

I'm optimistic in the sense that Sony must have had all this available internally for months before making the designs open to the public. It didn't work that way with the a7r IV, but in previous models the Sony camera has actually been out before these spec sheets for competitors were public.

A new a7S with internal 10-bit codec would do great with the IMX554 too: keeping 14-bit ADCs for optimal DR, it could get 4k at 24-25-30 fps with no crop, at 50fps with 1.1x crop, and at 60fps with 1.3x crop

So, of the four ID's registered, A7 RIV was the first to be announced. Now, Sony teases (in Chinese) what looks like RX100 MKVII. That's the second shoe. Two more to go.

And RX100 Mark VII it is. 4K, auto focus from A9, flippy screen, 24-200 zoom (FF equivalent), $1,200, should ship in less than a month.

More details, if they're revealed, later.

8 bit 4:2:2 out on the RX100 .... so depending on how you look at it - Sony is giving options / differencing each of their lines or crippling certain video features for certain price points on their mirrorless

The 4:2:2 output (in 8-bit) has been pretty much a standard on all of the Sony mirrorless' for the past 3-4 years.

For real. I just don't get why it's taking so long.

(Even though the 1DX Mark II has a 1.3x crop and no LOG, but still.)

yeah, im looking at the black magic p4k right now because the 4/3 sensor is a 1.89 crop, with a .71 speedbooster i end up with a 1.34 crop essentially the same as the damn 1dx in 4k but without the 5k pricetag. + better codecs + lighter + way better recording tech with SSD connectivity.

The Pocket has like 40+ things better than the 1DX Mark II, but that darn AF is still #1 for me so I wouldn't choose over it...but literally everything else is better on the BM.

FWIW, Sigma pf will have a dual exposure in order to achieve high dynamic range. Red experimented with it as well but had some problems with frame blending, IIRC. I remember NorBro explaining to me how it worked. Not ARRI but doable for the no-motion sequences. How pf will fare with this technology is currently known only to Sigma's executives.

Oh, I was able to get the frame blending motion artifact on my iPhone. I think most higher end phones are using some sort of frame blending for higher dynamic range photos.

The new RX100 has two very nice improvements: it has a mic jack, which was definitely needed because without it you can't use it for vlogging, and it has eye-detect AF in video mode, which is barely useful in a camera that has a 2.7x crop factor and a f/2.8-4 lens, but hey, it appeared first in the a7r4 and now here, so I guess it's standard for all new Sony models going forward, and that is good news.

Then again... I'm color grading a piece in which I used both my current p4k and my previous Sony, and really, I can't see myself going back to that codec. Sure, the Sony I'm using is not the latest and greatest (it's an RX100IV) but the problem is with the codec itself, and that hasn't changed yet. The loss of detail in the shadows is awful, it feels like the difference in dynamic range is much, much bigger than the less-than-one-stop that I measured in controlled static tests. Hair detail in brunettes makes the comparison just like day and night. I'm falling in love with barely-compressed-RAW and I'm not sure there's a way out of this.

Every camera that I know of does multiple exposures over and beyond its native dynamic range capabilities. Of course, a camera with 14 stops in Raw needs that rarely other than for effect.

I watched the Fro review. I think his summary was very succinct ~ it's for a a well heeled vacationer.

Nikon Rumors think that the 61 MPX sensor is for sale and will appear in - possible name -Z8. They also think there'll be Z 3, 4 and 9.

They're not sure about the Star Wars prequels.
