Sony introduce affordable SxS-1 Cards

These are the new SXS-1 cards they announced with the EX1R & PMW350. They are Sony's equivalent of the Panasonic E series P2 cards, being MLC Flash memory based. This makes them more economic to manufacture and sell, but limits their life time to '5 years'. I am not sure if that is 5 years of a specific amount of use, or if they are no longer reliable even after sitting on the self for 5 years. I would hope the former otherwise you are going to have to ensure you have a manufacturing date stamp on the card and packaging itself, & who would want to keep much stock unless it moved out the door fast...

Apparently write/read speeds are not negatively effected with the use of MLC.

Initial prices some web sites were throwing around a week or so ago (with the announcement) were something like a 32GB card for 200 UK pounds. I'm not sure how accurate that is, but if it is true its not far off replacing SDHC use for recordings unless you have many many hours to record, or you want to be able to hand over media on the day.

Is there any signal of a price drop on their full-life SxS 32GB media? I need to buy some for my third EX camera, and it's going to be a 32, not a 16, but I would just as soon wait a month if it will be lower in price.

Yea, I agree. Lets see what eventuates. I think that 5 year life is with a single daily use, so there is a good chance for many of us the SxS-1 cards would last much longer & by the time they are dead will be either end of life or no longer our prefered media anyway(8GB cards are already discontinued only 2years on...) Remacement media will be much cheaper again in 5 years.

Sony advertizes the use their MS memory cards I beliveve in their EX-1r cameras; I've been useing the mark II versions in the EX- 1 and find that you can also close the door, although the cost is a little bit higher than the SD memory cards for the same memory size. I've tested them at 31-32 fps @ 24p SS slow motion before errors, which should be fast and safe enough for standard speeds. Sony also recomends the use of the HG series, which is faster sold a fry's for about $85 dollars for 16gig. now, and I know that there is a 32gig available or in the works. This may be the solution for inexpensive reliable memory certified by Sony to replace the SxS cards for HDV and HQ recording. -- Carl
