35 MM PROTOTYPE
“Affordable” 35mm Camcorder – Widening the appeal of Sony 35mm
Following on from the announcement at NAB, Sony will re-affirm its plan to introduce an "affordable 35mm camera" to join the F35 and the SRW-9000PL. The demonstration of an R&D prototype will re-affirm the goal of establishing a 35mm line-up to cover applications from high budget to lower budget production.
NOTHING MORE THAN A PHOTO for the 35mm prototype, so .. we expect that sony says more about ..

SRW-9000PL will be available at the end September, 2010

PMW-500
The PMW-500 combines the exceptional picture quality of the PDW-700 with the operational flexibility of recording onto solid state SxS memory card. The PMW-500 is equipped with three 2/3” Power HAD FX CCD image sensors and can record both 1080 and 720 HD pictures at 50 Mb/s.

OTHERS
At IBC, Sony is also adding a new higher capacity 64GB (SBS-64G1A) card which can record 2 hours of material at HD422 50Mbps MXF mode, or more than 4 hours of materialand has an increased transfer speed of 1.2Gbps (SBS-32G1A & SBS-64G1A). The PMW-500 ex-factory will be within October 2010

There also a 3D camera prototype, and a VPL-HW20 HD Home cinema projector

Hoping Sony releases some more info soon on the 35mm. I'd be willing to sit on my money if Sony has some decent specs on a FF35 or even S35 camera, rather than run out and buy an AF100.

Related to the 35mm affordable camcorder
Sony said nothing more than a few words ..

They are getting customer's feeling about what specs the customers will have on this camera.
The video conference says some words about this camera "we are on early stage" .. and "2011"

Can someone -view the video and- post here the words about the affordable 35mm ?

ICB 2010 Press conference, go for minute 34'

From the pic, their "affordable 35mm" cam looks to be in the same ball-park as the AF100.
However, uttering "affordable" in the same sentance as "F35" makes me wonder, affordable by whom?

just wasting some time here, I think ... af100 in 2010 , Sony counter strike nab2011 (avail to purchase late fall 2011 (?)), Canon counter strike 2012, Red Scarlet s35 2012.

I remember there were some discussions about the Sony offering at $19k. Of course, we are way too early in the game to nail down a number. BUT, I don't know that I'd be willing to spring 3x as much cash (comparing to AF100), for a larger sensor and the EX format.

Looking at the specs and features of the AF100 that Barry is listing off as I type, what I would like to see from Sony would be:

- 3k rez
- more robust recording format [than AVC]
- 120fps
- FF35, or at least S35
- RAW

Exciting times! I think even if you are not a RED fan you should still appreciate them for moving the industry forward, much faster than it would have moved had they never existed.

That could very well be what goes down, which is why I'm sort of inclined to wait a bit and not jump on the AF100 right away. Especially if I wait and end up buying more Canon lenses for my DSLR.

Although, this Sony camera being XD-CAM based, makes me think it will be substantially pricier than the AF100. Maybe on par price wise with the s35 Scarlet?

Red played it's part in making the price and exclusivity of the Genesis/F35 look like a joke... but I think it was Cannon's 'accidental' FF35 video mode that destroyed the current state of the "pro-sumer" video world.

Everytime I trail Blazed with technology , I have been burned bad. This time I am older and wiser and I am sitting back and let the braves path the way.

Panasonic's AF100 and this camera, you know they're going for the "prosumer" form factor, like the HMC150. And that's a great form factor, one that I've come to love, although I grew up using a shoulder camera. It's a nice compromise of flexible camera angles yet enough surface area for things like XLR inputs. And looking down at an LCD screen takes away the eerie resemblance to a sniper that following people through viewfinder kind of has, so you are less intrusive-feeling to non-actor subjects in documentary settings.

Anyway, and I know I've said this in other threads, they're making these new cameras too big. Because with a decent zoom lens they're gonna be bigger and heavier than the HMC150, etc. They need to be about half as long as the prototypes they've shown.

That AVCHD e-mount camera that Sony has already shown, the NEX-VG10, is a great size and shape --- if only they can find somewhere to put a couple XLR jacks.

And of course upgrade the internals to at least do 24p, preferably up to 60p. And, I'll say it again, in hopes that persistence will bring something, GLOBAL SHUTTER!

that wont be cheap, man :P

if it has the specs of af100, itll be around an ex3's price range

it doesnt. this a baby f35.

ive been told it will have internal recording of some sort. but its main design is for external recorders.. i asked if this meant dual link.. my source wouldnt confirm or deny anything.

it is a single super35mm cmos sensor.

designed to compete against RED in that price range.

thats all i managed to find out.

Availability & wish list

Availability & wish list

On sony last IBC video, sony Head said that the camcorder will be available at beggining 2011 ..

Remember words on NAB 2010 on other Big Sony Man said prior to NAB 2011.

As a prosumer we will all for a 1 dollar, but reallistyc we cannot demand things like CCD, 120fps, and so on .. for an affordable price (maybe around 10.000$).
Even when sony, as other cam manufacturers have a full line of priced cams.
So please no ask sony to down prices & up features both 50%.

Let me open another thread that will be called "Whislist for the new affordable sony 35mm camcorder"
