HVRZ1U seems to be both PAL and NTSC. Here's a quote from Sony's specs page on this cam. That's pretty impressive!

It does do both PAL and NTSC. It also does HDV at 1080/50i and 1080/60i. Be careful with the term HDcam, as that makes it sound like HDCAM, Sony's proprietary high-end HD format as used on the $100,000+ CineAlta. The Z1U is an HDV camera.

I understand that Barry. I was just suprised that the cam records in both. This means that to have recordings in both modes will enable shooters to enlarge their client base. It may not be important for shooters in the US but out here in the hinterlands of the world it can make a difference. I certainly wonder if Panasonic has been thinking along these lines with the HDX? That certainly would be a wonderful suprise if it were so! I also wonder what the technical difficulties are to have a cam shoot in both modes? It makes sense that HD and HDV are higher resolutions and configurations than PAL or NTSC. Would the lesser resolutions of PAL/NTSC be a codec element (software codec) in the cams?

I'm pretty sure it's hardware all the way.

We've lobbied Panasonic to make a universal version of the new camera. I doubt they will, as (apart from the Z1U) it's never been done before. But it sure would be nice!

It seems to me, Panasonic going the same route as the Z1U would be a helpful move and at the same time would only require they manufacture one cam for all areas of the planet. Doesn't it make sense to go that way?
