Any known workarounds to get your HD video off of tape from this camera? Seems to record HD in a Sony proprietary format and will not import into Final Cut. Works OK in DV mode but that's not why we bought it.

I think that's a problem with Final Cut and not the camera. Sony's HDV implementation is actually the friendliest one out there; any HDV camera will read it. I have some tapes right now that were shot on a Sony FX1 and it reads just fine on the Canon A1. Check your capture setting on the camera and make sure that it's not set to downconvert. Try capturing on a different computer.
