Sony HVR-MRC1k works with EX-1?

In the interest of future proofing, would the HVR-MRC1k CF recorder work with the EX1? I'm thinking of purchasing one for my XH-A1.

Thanks

I purchased the HVRMRC1 a couple of weeks ago along with the Z5U .. I wanted the all around unit and the new G lens for zoom and wide without lens changes in the field. Just for fun I shot some DV with an old handheld consumer Sony pc-330 that had a firewire in/out - attached to the HVRMRC1 .. worked like a charm .. started and stoped with the record trigger on the camera. Recorded DV onto the card and transfered to my laptop. Also tried it with a Z1 and had the same results ... in HD. I then tried it with a Sony HDR-HC3 a small consumer hand held camera that shoots HD - 1080i like the Z1 .. and it worked great .. started and stoped with the record button on the camera.
I also tried recording with all of these cameras tapeless ... and it worked if you manually started the HVRMRC1 by pressing the record buttons on the back of the unit. It recorded whatever came thru the lens ... without any of the menu items showing on the recorded footage. I am still playing around with both the camera and the unit, and there is alot more to learn on both.
It comes with its own cradle / bracket to mount onto the flash / light / mic shoe of any other camera ... sony np battery clips on the back and it uses the chubby firewire connector which is so much better in field conditions than the smaller one.
I bought a couple of 16 gb scandisk compact flash cards (extreme III 30mbps or 200x) each will record 70 minutes of footage .. recording time is visible in the viewfinder of my Z5 .... .. It takes a little over 15 minutes to transfer the footage to my laptop ... not bad. There are some faster card readers out there as well as faster cards so those numbers will change depending on your hardware.
To attempt to answer your question I think that if you have a Sony and it has a firewire out you can record to this unit externally. It records, interval, 1080i 60, 1080 24p and 1080 30p as well as DV. Your EX is far superior to my z5 in many respects so as far as recording PAL or being able to transfer or record over and under cranked footage I cannot say. I have a friend on the coast with an EX1 and I will be out there on a shoot in a couple of weeks .. we will hook up the two and see what comes out the other end .......

Please let me know what you find. I don't have an EX1 (yet) but I didn't want to buy this unit if I couldn't use it for both my canon xh-a1 and the EX1.

Thanks

Hi there !
You mention that you recorded in Z1 and worked like charm. Was that in HDV mode and did you get the 1440/1080i pixel ratio? I have a XLH1 camera that I am thinking to use with Sony HVR-MRC1k but I am worried that it doesn't work if I shot 25f mode. Do you have by any chance any one that have a canon camera that you can try if it works in 25f or 24f if you are in US.
Best regards

I think, EX-1 will work with MRC1K via Firewire only in SP mode (25Mbps), after you enable Firewire outpit in the Menu...

Yep, the firewire output is only ever active in SP mode. SP is basically HDV which is what is sent out the 1394 and is all such a recorder will work with anyway (HDV & DV).

I'm not really seeing the point of using one on a EX though, with MxM/MxR & SDHC its kinda redundant.
