Sony HDR-HC1?

has anyone shot on the HDR-HC1 camera? what's your opinion of it for whatever you're shooting?

My boss just bought one and I'm going to be shooting on it. Is it a better camera then the VX2000 which is what i'm shooting on now. I know the lens is a lot smaller. Any advice, comments on the camera would be appreciated. We do amatuer video material for online modeling. We put DVDs together and send files across a network in WMV format.

I'm a new HC1 owner (had it for 1 week now) and really like it. I'm not as skilled as most in this forum, so I guess I can't really vouch from a professional eye, howeve I was blown away by it's quality when I played back footage from the camera hooked up to a friends HiDef TV. In low light, as you probably heard everywhere, the picture is quite grainy/dark.

I posted a sample clip (taken the morning after I got the camera, because I exported this clip as WMV v9, HD 720-30p, the quality isn't quite what it actually is at 60i, however to do a 60i AVI file is Huge).

Also, I love the size of the HC1 and am really glad I did not get an xl1, or gl2 (which I was also looking at)... the camera gives amazing shots while not drawing attention to it. I think if I had a larger camera, I'd be really self concious when using in public on Holidays, or even with family events/get togethers at a resteraunt or wherever). I'm really considering getting a Wide Angle lens though, cause alot of the time I'm taking video of objects up lose, and can't fit everything into view.

James,

thanks for the sample footage! i just showed it to the guys here at work, i cant wait to get shooting on this thing! by the way, i have a wide angle lens on the VX2000 that i currently shoot with. its great for indoors, it keeps me from having to back into the corners of the room to get a wide shot. i totally agree with you about the size of the HC1, my boss bought it so we could shoot without catching so much attention, and i hope it will be great for this.

I'm a new HC1 owner too, I've had it for a month or so but I haven't had much time to play with it.

Here's some footage that I shot at the airport. The plane is in a hanger half in flourecent light and bright sun light. The enterior of the plane was backlit and I couldn't see the rudder pedals but the camera worked well - a little noisy.

This was shot in 1080i but I captured in SD. It's a little under a minute long, the music is The Dream by the Moody Blues.

Hey Chuck....

cool video! especially liked the little "zoom in on interior/cut/zoom out from propellar" sequence.

Have you played around with the "Back Light" button at all? apparently it helps keep objects from becoming too dark when they are beside a bright source. (Ie: shooting something that is beside a bright window)

capturing video from the HC1?

capturing video from the HC1?

right now when I shoot on the sony VX2000, I rip the tapes on my sony GV-D1000...sonys minidv digital video cassette recorder, but when I put a tape in it that I shot on the HC1, nothing shows up on the monitor. I know I can capture video from the camera itself, but is there another capture device that I have to buy for capturing HD so that I don't have to use the camera, or can the D1000 capture HD video by using a different setting I dont know about?

very confused.

I don't know anything about the GV-D1000, but to my recollection it is just a MiniDV deck with a monitor. It's not designed to playback HDV material?

MiniDV and HDV are two different recording formats. Just because the tape is the same doesn't mean it will play in the same devices.

It's similar to Hi8 and Digital8. Digital8 devices will playack Digtial8 and Hi8, but Hi8 will not playback digital8 tapes.

Thanks for the insight Tibby, what device would I need to playback the HDV material so that I can capture it into my editing program?

You would need to buy a Sony HVR-M10U HDV VTR for about $3700 USD. Your cheapest option is to capture straight from the camera.

i have recently bought a hc1e camera but i have not put it on the computer for editing due to two reasons, THE FILES A TOO FUKING HUGE, some one help me, i dont know how to make them smaller but i was good quality too thats the reason i bought the 3000 dollar camera, not for it to waste my computers space with only 2 seconds of footage. can some one please tell me how to reducce the file size, also its not even good quality but yet its so large, i have movie files on my computer, which of course are shot with 100 times better cameras, but yet its only like 500 mb for an hour or two, where as with the hc1 its like 500 mb a minute or more. when i put it on the computer, using sony vegas it is in the file of m2t.
please some one help thank you very much

spook,

I am running premiere pro 1.5. I actually had to download a third party program "aspectHD" to capture and view the footage properly. As for the file size, you're talking about 500 mb, when I capture an hour of regular MiniDV footage from a sony VX2000, it takes up between 11 and 13 gbs on my drive. I've never used vegas but maybe someone can help you figure out how to capture with better compression. You can always work with heavily compressed files during your editing and then rez up when you're ready to print your final cut.

Good luck.

are you capturing "natively" or through an intermediate codec?
im on fcp5 and 1080i60 HDV takes roughly the same amount of space as DV25 material. i'd assume it would be the same if it was natively captured on pc.
intermediate codecs will indeed make some big files in relation to DV25 material.
