Good question. I think the answer is that it is. The URSA may not be on the radar of people here on the forum, but we are just a tiny little sliver of the market. I think it does compete with cameras like the FX6 and FX9.
 
Well, 8K 120fps S35 is nothing to sneeze at in the context we're discussing. Or 12K 60fps

Only recording in BRAW kind of limits its flexibility. I also think it has a bit less DR than the Ursa 4.6K G2. And it has some minor moire issues. No AF. Lower sensitivity

I feel like folks on this forum have pretty varied camera purchases... but Brawley left and he was big on BM. I think Tom Roper bought an Ursa 12K but he left recently too (maybe he's back now?)

if it were a world-beating camera, I feel like all dvxusers would have it. Especially now that it's only $6k
 
I was tempted to get one, and you know how firmly I am in the Sony camp. I'm okay with BRAW because every frame of video I use goes through Resolve anyway no matter the codec, camera, or shooting mode.
 
Main issue I think is you couldn't use your E mount lenses. PL, EF, or F only. After I switched to Sony and started buying native Sony lenses, I definitely lost camera choice flexibility
 
His 200-400mm would pair nicely with it and some 4K/240fps...

[Although probably best to use a bit less in the higher-resolutions.]

I think you are correct. Not the most obvious, but certainly some appeal overlap between them.

The 200-400 (with built-in 1.4x converter) Canon currently lives on my F55/R7. If I sell the lens then I really need to sell the camera and RAW recorder because they will have no purpose after that. I need all three components or none of them at all. There aren't any e-mount lenses that can be used on the F55.

I have a f/2.8 PL 300mm RED Prime Pro that is a beautiful lens that I love operating on the F55, but 300mm isn't enough anymore. I suppose could get a PL 2.0x converter, but I don't really want to be dropping any more money into PL when I'm drifting more an more towards e-mount.

I was thinking you'd convert the URSA to an EF mount with Blackmagic's $175 mount and at least try the 200-400mm on it...all hypothetical, of course.

I'm looking forward to seeing what you think about the a1.
 
The Ursa 12K is for a different market segment than the FX6. If it was 1/3rd of the weight, had vND and decent AF..... then I'd swap without thinking! Imagine trying to solo run n gun with the Ursa.
 
Most of us (or a lot of us) here runned-and-gunned with camera setups ranging from 20-30lbs earlier in our careers so the 12K would be like a toy, but with that said I think most of us also wouldn't go back to that either after running-and-gunning with 5lb-7lb-10lb (max) setups these days.
 
Weight matters, but don't forget to factor in ergonomics. My Z750 is far heavier than any of the camera's mentioned recently, but I can shoot handheld with it a lot longer than with an FX6, FS7, F55, etc. I would argue that it is the best 4K run & gun camera ever made when you look at the whole package. I think ergonomically the Ursa is that style of camera, but falls short in other ways.
