Sony FX30: an aps-c FX3

... No price given but this looks like the least expensive 8K camera yet. Let's see how the hybrid AF works...

And it's $2,000. I didn't think they'd do it but they did it.

And the auto focus seems to work well too.

And it's 40 MPX and 8K video.

Did I mention it was $2,000?

This definitely moves the chains.

It puts some pressure on the FX30, that’s for sure.

Sort of interesting how they are doing allnof this, the slowly release cameras with lame specs, but allnof a sudden, a $2000 fuji x is doing 8K with F-Log and most likely comparable DR above 12defined stops of DR. 4:3 options, sub 15ms readout….

It certainly gives a sense of fomo to any hesitant buyers now. 8bit 1080p sound downright primitive, despite being what i watch most of the time, even blurays.

DLD
btw, i was thinking that if Canon was going to introduce some killer cinema cameras, that they might announce during the trade show in Amsterdam. But instead we got the small chip camcorders. not much time left in this year for any hope of a 2022 release for a new Cine camera with 20stops DR. lol

It's common practice for the cartel to spread out both the releases and the announcements. Canon came out with R7 and R10 recently. That's their Christmas season lineup. And R5 is still a huge seller and should remain such with the new firmware. With Covid (mostly) out of the way, there's CES in January, then CP+ in February. Canon is due for the EOS R and RP replacements but those rumors have been around for a long time. If Sony comes out with a vastly improved A7RV, Canon will have time for the new EOS R at a much lower price point.

PS. Except 40 MPX and 8K @ $2,000 is the new normal. So they might have to come out with a stripped down/crippled R5 for that much.

I took a quick peek at the B&H x-h2 review on their product page. I think something looks off about the motion cadence. Probably the readout is too slow for my taste. The color looks nice, though.

Amusingly, when I searched "x-h2" in my gmail to find a link back to this thread, I saw a draft I had written in May 2019 listing possible future camera releases I was thinking of buying. so basically the x-h2 is 2 or 3 years too late for me

How fast should the read out be to not have motion cadence issues for you?

Supposedly, 15 ms in 8K. I forgot where I saw it but Chris and Jordan of DP Review did mention that it's not for action shooters.

who measured it at 15ms?

maybe it's not the readout speed. but there was something unpleasant about the edge of the figure in motion, or the passing wire fencing, in that video. maybe it was just from the shutter speed, although it looked like the shooter was using ND. maybe it's just in my mind, but I don't think so

A reviewer says that the rolling shutter is double that of HS2.

But he still loves the camera.

Hmm if it's 23ms it shouldn't look THAT bad. Maybe his shutter speed was just high...

For me, the threshold is 15ms. if it is much more than that, i notice jello. but sub 10ms is ideal.

i think the 4k mode is faster on the Fuji, sub 10ms. not sure if it is a crop or line skip. but a 40mp sensor can line skip on me if it wants to.

Ouch, CineD measures the H2S rolling shutter at 11.5.

Ah! dang!

Well, if one needs 8K 12stops latitude for $2K, perhaps 23ms isn’t a deal breaker, but it might be.

i’m weird in that i accept RS on full frame and VV, but not on s35 or APS-C, haha

I wouldn't buy a camera higher than 25 or 26 but I'd like it to be as low as possible. 30ms suuuuuucks. I think my a7iv is around 25, but I mostly use it for wide lock-offs, or else in 4k60p mode which much faster

I didn't notice the motion cadence as much in the DPReview xh2 video, although maybe because there was less movement going on. On my phone I couldn't distinguish between the detail level of a 200% crop of their 8K wide shot and the full shot (in 4K playback). But I gotta say that some of the deep focus shots of nature looked pretty harsh to me. Too much detail going on. Or maybe just too much sharpening. But I think the beauty of high resolution capture is that you can completely ditch sharpening and still get a detailed picture. They lrobably didn't do that. To be honest, I didn't like the look of their footage at all, besides the color which I thought was nice. And the bokeh of whatever their Lenses were looked nice

Generally speaking, I couldn't care less about resolutions higher than 4K except for cropping in on a wide lock-off or something. I'm not a megapixel queen

i believe in this motion cadence thing, i’m just never sure what people are actually talking about when they mention it. I tend to assume most CMOS is all similar, so i find that more often than not, it is bad contrast or a shutter angle issue. Have you tried testing your cameras for this cadence to better define it for yourself?

haha, yeah ////////////////

If tech continues the way it has, i feel 8K is a good sweet spot for displays, some content, and UI’s. Maybe not for the average theater, if they’ll still be relevant, but for a lot of large screens at home. HD is a bit more of an engineers wet dream, as it is super efficient, and is pretty much all you need at a lot of viewing distances.

I think they were on that new 56mm for most of the clip. And that's a 1.2, basically a portrait lens.

All the reviewers had a preproduction model too. Let's see if Fuji makes any alterations when the actual unit is shipped.

And watch out for those firmware upgrades. They may not be a bag of chips.

Certainly for the XT3 or 4 that was the case, with autofocus. (and did the R5 have issues with the first firmware? )

I think that was the opposite. The initial r5 firmware was even worse than they had intended and they had to patch it quickly. Whereas the xt3 accidentally had too good autofocus so they had to foul it up. Or so I hear. I never used it

It is sort of like how American automobile manufacturers make sucky cars on purpose.
