Sony FX30: an aps-c FX3

On the subject of ND filters, I see Sony's new FR7 PTZ Camera has an inbuilt variable ND in that small body. If that's the case, why do we not see a variable ND capability in the FX3 and A7 series? It can obviously be done. It's a FF E-Mount camera with a flange back of 18mm like the other bodies in the FF family. Likewise, it appears that there is no technical reason why Sony couldn't offer their variable ND across all their FX/A7 series FF cameras. Wonder why not? Hmm!

Chris Young

The FR7 PTZ body appears to be significantly bigger than the mirrorless bodies. That said, I do think it'd be possible to squeeze a variable ND into the FX or alpha series; Sony just choose not to do so.

but wait, full frame VHS? very intrigued! What was this? full sized 35mm format VHS camcorder?

D'oh! It was "full size", not "full frame". A friend of mine had a full size VHS RCA, used it to shoot a "commercial" for a hair cutting lady that he liked. He didn't get beyond the free haircut but that lady was really good at it. This was in the early 90's when the market moved into either VHS-C or 8mm. That made units much smaller and more convenient for the general consumer use.

It sort of looked like this :

And this is is the global photo-video market from a year ago.

Camera market share: Canon owns 48%, Sony 22%, Nikon drops to 14%

... I do now recall the Canon interchangeable lens Hi-8 camera called the LX1, which appears to be the precursor to the XL1. Interesting to note that the EF adapter for the XL1 didn’t get quite the traction that metabones or dof adapters did.

This was the camera, sold as L1 in the US (I think it was $2,500 then but 300,000Y would have been closer to $2,700)

Sony's Betacam was the real pro camera then but it also cost a lot more.

Ah hahha! Got my retro soul all rev’d up!

That’s a bute! The RCA VHS cameras are quintessential VHS (at least in N America). I suppose the players were too? You’re friend was Robert Rodriguezing it up! Those must’ve been good times!

Thanks! Ok, i was wondering for context. Idk if you mentioned it in response to my comments about Sony dominating the video camera industry or not. And in particular enthusiast, prosumer, and pro cameras since that is what DVXuser is typically focused on anyways. Very rare to mention P+S Canon’s from 2005. But if Sony was just a cog in the wheel, i’m open to that l, but from everything i’ve read or experienced, Sony has been pretty much front and center in most video camera related scenes. Look at early digital cinema cameras or prosumer camcorders, and it is difficult to get around the Sony name. Broadcast and journalism ended up using a lot of Sony, and it is still the brand i see the most often, not just in North America either. The first digitally shot and finished feature was using Sony. For them to then fumble the F35 and F65 but regain momentum with the Venice shows some staying power and dedication to the industry.

Did you see “Windhorse” by any chance? I’ve yet to see it

Which is too bad since it would be the single most impactful change they could make to the series, as far as I'm concerned

Can blame this drive for ever smaller. If we had Canon R3 “flagship” style bodies, we could get variable ND into something that is still quite small and technically mirroeles

I don't feel like starting a new thread before an official announcement because there may not much interest after it either.

Nonetheless, specs are leaked - highlights

newsshooter said the hasselblad doesn't have interesting video capabilities. I'm not sure why, since I stopped reading after that statement.

interesting specs on the fuji. I'm not super interested in recording modes that can't go to at least 60fps. It looks like it can do 60fps in 4K, but not higher. And it might be lower quality in 60fps since it probably can't do 60fps with full readout

And the new iPhone, #14 was announced last night.

Will have a quad-pixel 48/12 main camera. And some other stuff.

It's a studio portrait camera. Probably too slow even for weddings. Unless it's in a studio.

If the Fuji XH2 has the same dynamic range as the XH2S, it is a really awesome option, and in someways could put pressure on the FX30. We’ll have to see what the FX30 ends up being really.

For the FX30 to be a success, it would have to have a better screen than the FX3 and similar DR. At least 60fps full readout.

One thing about the FUJI is the over sampled 40mp sensor could allow it to have more organic grain structure.

Someone was saying how cameras releases have slowed down, yet i feel pro and semi pro cameras are being released more than ever before. Perhaps it is the choice of selection that causes everyone to be apathetic in part.

IBC 2022 is opening tomorrow in Amsterdam. The last two were canceled and this one is obscured by plumes of smoke too.

Ah DLD, sorry to hear about that. IBC is definitely one of the better ones. Did that change plans for you?

Amsterdam is hard place to navigate, even with the GPS. "Make a turn on a red light. Make another turn on a red light. Then another". Then you realize that place is nothing but red lights. I keep following the GPS but now I am $600 lighter.
