Hey everyone.

Earlier this year, we started making our "FXlyre" mounts.
These are Microphone mount replacements using Rycote Lyre Shocks and possibly many other shock mounts to remove all that nasty handling noise.

Key USP
  • Eliminates all handling noise and vibrations compared to the original Sony OEM microphone mount.
  • Flight-ready with a fully removable toolless design, it still works with the OEM screws.
  • Can be swapped and changed to different Rycote Lyre "shore" strengths based on your needs and circumstances.
  • It’s a non-destructive and 100% reversible.
  • Optional angles in both 30° and 0° based on your needs. 30° offering a low-profile design to reduce height, but obstructs XLR releases.
  • Optional Offsets to push the microphone further back to avoid being in shot, and keep the length of the camera shorter for packing.
  • Optional Platform sizes from Short, Standard, and Long to support the longest of mics.
  • Designed to snap first under sudden impact, to save your top handle.

Not sure if I'm allowed to link to the store to purchase them, but I love to hear feedback and thoughts.

This is a good idea as the original mount is lacking in many ways. Are you based in the US? Also, the angle/offset thing is a little confusing. Which one would you recommend for an fx6 using an at875r?

I absolutely hate the high, long way forward vulnerable mic mount that has plagued Sony cams since the advent of the PMW-EX1/3 series of cams.

Negatives:
1 - The height and forward position of the mic mounting point can cause mic snagging on objects and environmental surrounds as you move around.
2 - With the type of mic mount listed above means in my case I would have to dismount it to put in my smaller, more compact road case. Don't want to do that!

Positives... In my case at least!
1 - The setup I'm running keeps the mic/dead cat profile within the width of the camera with grip attached, and keeps it under the height profile of the top handle.
2 - Importantly, if I am running a physically small lens such as a 12 mm wide angle there is no chance of mic shadows or even the dead cat intruding into the shot.
3 - Because the mic placement now fits totally within the physical bounds of the camera, it means it will fit into any case or bag that will take the FX6 without a mic.

The SmallRig mic mount is insulated around the mic clamp and also has a dual rubber sound/vibration deadening flexible mount, which so far has not invited any sound issues.

So is this thread essentially an Ad for a product? And am I talking to an AI member?
No, it's not AI haha.
Anyone posting anything about something they made is, in some context, considered advertisement for what they made, is it however a problem if they are asking for cash on the other hand for said creation?

Wanted to share the design and gather thoughts while also promoting it, as some may find this very helpful.

Completely understand and agree, one of the biggest design considerations for our mount was height, adding this angle to the mic holder to keep headroom as low as possible was key

Our mount will never fit your exact needs, but I do understand and love what you have done, for all the reasons you mentioned above.

Woops - I realised I was up to V3 last year. Just posted the update. It is a bit longer (to help with droop), stronger, and refined.

Hey Jmone! Our design was actually a remix based on your design from our first-ever design changes for testing, our first posts that remixed your design, we mentioned that it could be grabbed for free from you for those who never wanted our 30-degree angle, which was not for everyone.

Since then, we started from scratch, our current v3 design (coming soon) is almost unrecognizable and further adapting out version to the FX3, and FX9 and many more, but I see you did some clever reinforcements to your V3, which is very smart!

Curious if this replacement mounts also work with the FS7 ? Or did the mount drastically change with the FX6 & 9 came out?

I use a short pencil mic (Octava mk12) which allows for the mic to stay on the camera and fit in the camera bag. Which for me is more important for run n gun quick deployment.

These type of mic mounts are unwieldy and don’t fully isolate the mic. I have one hand on the zoom rocker the other on the lens barrel. There shouldn’t be hand noise. Besides an on camera mic should be used in tandem with a wireless.

My solution was to make an offset bracket paired with a rod adapter and third-party shock mount.

Are you asking about the AT875R or shock mount contraption?

I just made it last week, and haven’t put it through its paces yet, but I’m not worried about handling noise, as I’ve done all the mitigation I can.

I didn’t notice it having more handling noise than other shotgun mics, but there’s not much room for a shock mount before running into the interference tube.
