Sony FX3 camcorder registered - 8K?

I'm curious about if the close integration with the Alpha and Cinema Lines will result in Sony taking the A1 sensor and following the same product release cycle as they did with A7SII---> FX6---> FX3 and perhaps go A1---> FX11? (goes to 11)---> FX4?

They have confirmed that there will be more cameras released this year, and they are really proud of the A1 sensor:

https://www.dpreview.com/interviews...a-1-is-the-first-step-towards-the-next-decade

It does look like the A1 sensor is the real deal, but, how much do video folks benefit from the speed compared to the stills shooters?

FX6 is already the A7S3 in a video camera form so FX3 makes little sense. Regardless of how marvellous it is.

but fx6 doesn't have a7siii price or dinky form factor. there was some room for a camera like that, especially for gimbal/drone, especially if it had eND

For video shooters I think the benefits of the sensor will be the following:

- Full-frame 8K up to 30fps that is down-sampled from 8.6K
- Better than expected lowlight for a high resolution sensor
- Pretty impressive rolling shutter for a high resolution sensor
- Sony's current best autofocus (until a new sensor debuts)
- S35 4K crop mode that down samples from 5.8K
- External ProRes RAW is currently 16-bit Full-frame 4332 x 2448 which makes me question how it is being achieved and if it necessarily "a true RAW" format. But there currently are no 8K ProRes RAW recorders besides the Atomos Neon series of monitors which are not designed for in the field use.

I know some have wondered if the A1 sensor may instead be used for the VENICE upgrade or replacement, and while I need to look into a bit more, if the sensor cannot cover the multi-aspect ratios that the VENICE can, which is one of it's biggest selling points, I don't think Sony would go for the A1 sensor as the VENICE "replacement":

Picture posted really small, but the VENICE sensor information is on this page:

Ya, I also think they'll have a "different" sensor for their pro 8K video camera but there's likely to be a significant overlap with A1 in terms of the general technology.

Sony has a lot of models out there but there's currently a huuuuuuuge gap between FX-9 and Venice. So, it'd make sense for them to have an 8K model in the $20,000-$25,000 range. Maybe, if they can fit it inside an FX-6 type body, they could field a quality alternative to LF Mini and the RED.

Canon has been rumored to be replacing C-700FF also.

Well now you guys have me back in a surly mood with your argumentativeness.

The only thing is - you could say the same thing about the a7siii.

Yes, AS I stated:

“ It isn’t the only amazing little camera, of course. ”

________

“ Haveing an external tally light is not a wonder.”

I did not characterize the tally-light feature as being a “wonder”. I specifically characterized it as “useful” and “nice to have”. I qualified that the tally is “not a game-changer”. How, from that, did you come away thinking I characterized it as a “wonder”?

Note how my post, one that encouraged positiveness and attempted to discourage the nit-picking grumbling, was immediately met with...what? Negativeness and not-picking grumbling. The exact sort of spoiled under-appreciation I suggested needs tempering. Well, have at it then. “It doesn’t have THIS!! Wah wah wah!”. “They didn’t incorporate X into the design!! What a bunch of incompetent DUMMIES. I would have included it because I am mother-f*cking smart but those dim-bulbs make UNFORGIVABLE decisions.”

Don’t like the camera, don’t buy it then. Buy the camera you do like or go design, engineer, and produce a camera of your own. Name it “Negative Nancy”. Or “Pocket Negative Nancy”.

Maybe Black Magic cameras are cleverly designed and brilliantly thought out. I wouldn’t know because I do not own one and none of the working professionals I know personally and work with own one. Because few clients want one for their shoot. Few clients have even heard of Blackmagic. I don’t consider any BM camera to be a “serious” camera. By that I mean that few serious professionals buy a BM camera as their primary camera. Blackmagic= hipster-doodle flake. Guys with beards and ponytails. Woke but always broke.

I'm afraid some of people's disappointed energy about the FX3 may have been misdirected at you, JPNola, for defending it so passionately. Apologies for nitpicking :)

I have not followed the manner in which Sony is marketing this camera, but do you all get that the FX3 is largely an A7siii for drone work? I’ve read in multiple places that the idea is a camera for Sony to bundle with their new drone. And yes, Morgan, even for drone-work the single bottom-mount is an oversight. A frustrating and perplexing one. I completely agree that there are times when the design is so thoughtless that one wonders if Sony designers ever consult anyone who actually works in the field.

I do like that Sony is attempting to produce small mirrorless cameras that are more cinema focused. It would not have bothered me at all if the a7siii or FX3 did not have still photo capability at all. I don’t take stills with my A7sii. If jettisoning the stills capability makes room for more video features I’m all for it.

Look, I get it. Sony regularly does things that are baffling, odd, and even “unforgivable”. Here is but one example of Sony head-scratchers that caused me to chuckle:

from Newsshooter, who likely got it from Sony’s press-kit-

“ The FX3 is not an alpha camera but part of the Cinema Camera FX line up”

Okay. NOT an alpha-camera. So Sony places the Alpha logo right up front on the camera.

well, for drone work, one might avail oneself of the multiple mounting points on top, no? as for morgan's top-mounted movi configuration

“Pocket Negative Nancy” was pretty good, eh?

No? It was lame as F? Well, at least I can count on you to always be honest with me. :-)

When I started doing this 5 years ago or so, it wasn't every model.

Now it's not even fun to do anymore...every Sony and Canon higher-end camera is a top seller or best seller (everyone else rarely receives the acknowledgement besides the Pockets).

Anyone know if the LCD can fold up with screen facing camera-body, in order to protect it when not in use?

Reviewers keep failing to mention that when describing and photographing the orientable LCD. I’ve yet to find an FX3 image where the LCD is flipped to face the rear of the body...so it likely does not have that ability.

Do any of the Sony mirrorless cameras have that ability?

haha, just showing the top sellers and best sellers on B&H...the little badges that cameras receive if they are doing well, especially with preorders (at least for their business).

And the a7SIII has a flip screen that can be flipped how you'd like. a7C too. Everything before couldn't.

The FX3 looks like it can but haven't actually seen it.

I started on the Nikkormat, which is a while ago, and have been working ever since with many generations of camera. Never has there in that 1/4 of a centrury have cameras been released with such a sense of being half finished projects and cash cows. Sony never feel like im being helped though my working day (I bet 2/3 cameras have that feel) Sony are baiting me to trip up.

Ive been on jobs where I didnt roll when I shouda - a mix of lack of tally light and th FS7 button with a 3 second delay* leading to double tapping (and GH4 too to be not anti sony) - small design details ruin days and lose clients. Yep l learned on the nikkormat.. which is a responsive bit of clockwork.

I feel it is important to have these issues out in the hope that something gets through sometime somehow. And people know what they are getting into.

Ive done it so many times like buying the FS7 which had to be 'fixed' with monitor, external power, rig, zacuto bottom wedge, adding 25% to the price. And hours of thought. Its so tiring.

As for BM I do rate them kind of they feel honest but have some flaws inherent with being a small company.

Sony are a big company and the computer side is amazing.

As it happens I am building my own camera - its horrible but at least it has built in ND and two tripod holes :) https://www.instagram.com/p/CLuvxDzhkqt/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link

Watching the Aussie vid.. how I hate youtubers.. or how clueless they are.. its all about reading between the lines.

So the camera has no degree shutter setting?

The SQ requires mode->scroll wheel

Then you gotta change shutter speed.

but the rear wheel is now (and I was initially impressed) an ISO wheel.

So back to changing shutter speed I guess thats some sort of menu dive.

On the FS7 going to HFR and having the correct shutter angle is one button press (something I could almost do in the dark - lit buttons not come to sony yet - unlike the 2001 nikons?)

on this press scroll, press, press scroll press ??

As it happens I am sort of interested in this cam as it doesnt seem as stupid wide as the C70 and could work on the gimbal.

Can one reprogram the dials on the fx3 as much as on the A7SIII?

I have the 3 spinny wheels on the camera set to aperture, WB K, and ISO, although it takes one push of a custom button to enter this mode (and if I want to change shutter speed, which is much rarer, I push the custom button again to make the shutter speed wheel do shutter speed again).

This is the most friendly camera system I have used for on-the-fly color/exposure adjustments. Then, I use other custom buttons for S35 crop, zebras, and face AF on/off. All in all, the exquisite customizability compensates for some of the drawbacks of the body design

I don’t know the answer to your question but I did see in one of the “influencer/review” videos I scan watched that somone mentioned that the menus were 98% the same as A7SIII...so I would imagine it would be yes.
