Sony FX3 camcorder registered - 8K?

Haven't really seen anything alluding to the fact that it will have e-ND, .

I sort of feel like the "cinema" marketing implies it should have internal ND, although I haven't seen it rumored or indicated on the body and certainly many cinema cameras do not

If this FX3 is what I think it is - a pared down FX6 in a tiny form factor (to go on Sony's new drone/use on gimbals) then I'll almost certainly pick one up (to live on my RS2).

The weird thing is, if that is the design concept (going on their drone) it would be very strange for them not to build a unit that included the electronic ND in it (since that would be so useful for that particular concept). But I'm struggling to see how you could possibly squeeze one into a body THAT small.

My guess is corporate did not include eND as it would hurt the FX6 too much.

If they didn't, it should have something really cool the FX6 doesn't (which may not be useful to some, but nice for others).

In the camcorder market Sony has always had versions that had the clearly similar internals but just a few differences between consumer and Pro. Usually the Pro had an SDI connector and timecode with maybe higher data rate recording. I think that is still the case. I think they are doing the same here in using the guts of the A7S3 in another package aimed at a different market and we will have to see how they position this FX3. I have my doubts that it will be too different from the A7S3.

Is this really true? It's not THAT much cheaper than the FX6 and the form factor exacerbates many of the operational issues people already have with the FX6, which is why Grug mentions using it as a gimbal-only camera

IDK, but I'm looking more at the psychology of the business, not the passion of a videographer.

It would be around a $1400 difference, around the same amount that currently exists between a R5 and a C70.

It's a chunky amount to sway either way; possibly more towards the FX6 if you drop the ND filters for a couple more million dollars.

True. Sony could make it a loss leader, though, in a bid to capture system users. I spent more money on E mount lenses than I did on my A7SIII, and those lenses are the main reason I'd consider getting an FX6 or fx3. If I had RF lenses, then not so much. I've been hearing from stills photographers for years about how they're locked in to whatever brand they use due to autofocus and flash compatibility. I've used EF lenses on all my cameras, with adapters when necessary, but now it's autofocus time and a generation of videographers is probably committing to a brand right now for the next 5+ years. And it's basically canon vs sony

Maybe...and I know everyone's different but to me it seems like camera turnover is radical these days.

A few models per year for many, which would also explain the rapid turnover from Canon and Sony because they know this.

The musical chairs has to stop some time. When you get a camera that ticks your boxes like the FS7, people can sit on it for years. As cameras have fewer and fewer missing specs and features, there is less and less of a need to upgrade (and hence the push for higher resolution from TV and camera manufacturers). If the number of competing brands shrinks, there may be less need to rush out new models.

IMO, it stops when people run out of money.

Although many can easily use one system for 5 years, many will not because they simply do not want to.

If nothing else, simply having multiple 1/4"-20 mounting points on the top and bottom of the camera is a BIG deal. It really is.

Mirrorless cameras (due to all having just a single 1/4"-20 on the bottom), cannot be securely rigged with conventional cinema accessories - the levels of flex inherent in trying to attach things to their native design, is hugely problematic.

If it does nothing else, the FX3 will at least solve that issue. Which is a big deal for popping a camera like this in a Movi or Ronin 2 and pairing it with normal cinema lenses and FIZ control.

Now, sure, those aren't requirements that everyone has. But it's a BIG deal for conventional production.

Definitely agree for those who need it, but I think the many who truly do are already using other conventional cameras.

yes, but it may make this camera ideal for anyone who wants a crash cam or gimbal or drone cam paired with those accessories. which then makes the whole ecosystem more interesting

and to be honest, I have issues with camera twisting when using a focus motor. not massive and I can take precautions to prevent it. but it would sure be cool if it didn't happen :). with the a7siii, I'm largely relying on autofocus but I now use the motor to drive the zoom

and as long as the fx3 has gyroscope data to feed catalyst browse, it may not be missing much in terms of IBIS

If one's purchasing a camera mostly because of its threads, he or she is doing pretty well :)

It looks delicious, I want it. On the other hand, the EVF is possibly the best thing about the a7Siii so I won't be getting it.

All these 'cinema cameras' with no EVF. If I start a rumour that Sony are bringing out the world's best external EVF for under 1000 dollars will it increase the chances of them actually doing it? We all know they could.

A lack of EVF is a big miss IMO. The A7SIII's EVF is really great - so life-like...
