Sony FS700u Confusiong about Firmware

I bought one a few days ago. The guy told me that the 4k RAW upgrade has not been performed. he claimed its been sitting a rental house its entire life, but wasn't renting. My question is, and forgive me I am sick and have little patience to search page after page for the answer is, is it possible they did the firmware upgrade without the hardware upgrade? The Firmware version on mine V3.01 and going through the menu It allows me to select raw, and it execute, also lets me select 4K and 2K. any insight? thanks
 
I never heard of anyone able to do the firmware upgrade with out the hardware upgrade. I'm almost thinking you DO have the hardware upgrade if it allows you to select 4K and RAW. I can't confirm it 100% though, sorry. Trying to think of a way you can test it without an external recorder. Does it let you record Slog2?
 
If it has firmware 3.00 or 3.01, then it has the 4K upgrade. And you can upgrade it to firmware 3.10 if you want in-body lens correction for the SELP18-105.

Information revealed on these forums from Sony service in Australia indicated there was never any actual hardware upgrade. The problem was that software code on an FPGA chip deep inside the camera needed to be changed, which necessitated taking the camera apart, and putting the board on a jig to allow re-programming. This is why the firmware update was not user-installable. That's the story anyway.

Regardless, you're good to go with 4K...
 
thanks for the response guys. I'm guessing the rental house did the upgrade and he didn't know it. Not sure about S-log. haven't found it yet, I'm not too familiar with the menu system yet. where would I find it?

in the manual ;-)
Joking aside, it's as standard in PP7 but you can change the PPs however you want. PP7 was added in FW 3.0.x before it was PP of, PP1 - PP6

Also possible that they bought the FS700R model (which comes with 4K RAW out) and didn't realize it. So to him, they never upgraded the firmware or bothered to send it out (which they wouldn't have had to do anyway). But you're good to go.

Get the Odyssey7Q+, I can't recommend it highly enough. Completely transforms the FS700, I pretty much refuse to shoot without it!
 
Firmware 3.0/3.1 is the one with 4K Raw enabled, there's not a hardware upgraded needed it's all software (well, the FGPA needed to be reprogrammed).

If you can select RAW as an option it's definitely enabled as prior to this there was no Raw option.

Sounds like you got a bargain, well done!
