I just saw Andy tweet from AbelCine, "Sony #FS700 pre-order available from @abelcine give us a call!" and the most interesting part, "FS700 official sell price - $7,999."

And the 4K software upgrade will probably be another $2000 .. and it'll come free with the cam next year.

Cheers.

I am not sure about the software, but the recorder obviously would be propriety. 3G HD-SDI is not fast enough for 12 bit 4K

"The De-Bayer process greatly increases the amount of data that needs to be processed, keeping the data as luminance only minimises how much data there is and makes it possible to pass 12 bits of 4k data over a 3G HDSDi cable.

"Now, this signal from the FS700 will not comply with any standard that I know of, so it will need a dedicated recorder or at least a recorder programmed to accept it, but it promises a lot of exciting possibilities."

I think I'm going to do that. It's a world camera, so why not? A flight and 2 or 3 days holiday in NY, and I'd still be making a worthwhile saving.
Bring some pro looking equipment with you, so you don't just have the FS700 by itself. When they ask, you're a photo/video journalist by George.

Yep. I flown all over the place with a ton of photo gear, and I've never been asked to produce a receipt for any of it. I don't suppose anyone has. It would just create a nightmare in paperwork for the customs people. Buy it in the US, post the empty packaging + documentation back to the UK, and bring the camera back in my camera bag.

In fact, it might not even be liable for duties and tax. If I buy it NY and use it for a few days, it's no longer new, so presumably it doesn't attract tax + duties. If it did, then anyone who had been in the US for, say, 6 months, would find themselves having to pay duties on anything they'd bought in that period.

There will be sales tax if you buy it from any store in the US.

Usually buying it online and getting it delivered (to a different state) avoids the sales tax.

Throw some dirt on it and scratch it up. They are not going to believe you if they don't wan't to believe you.
